Attirées par le dynamisme des sociétés urbaines ou le faste de la cour, les élites nobiliaires européennes résident de plus en plus volontiers en ville durant les xviie et xviiie siècles. Qu’elles soient acquises à l’urbanité ou qu’elles conservent un lien étroit avec leurs seigneuries, qu’elles émargent assidûment au service du prince ou qu’elles ne fréquentent la cour qu’épisodiquement, ces noblesses usent de la ville de cour comme d’une scène à même d’illustrer leur éminence sociale et politique. Envisager la noblesse dans ces villes au profil singulier c’est questionner, à travers le prisme urbain, les contours de l’institution curiale, faire apparaître les points de contact et les interstices dans lesquels se nouent les relations entre le courtisan et la dynastie régnante. C’est aussi interroger les appartenances et les identités multiples développées par ces élites. L’habitat et les pratiques immobilières, la sociabilité, le mécénat et les investissements économiques, voire le simple séjour, sont autant d’entrées qui permettent d’éclairer la multiplicité des leviers mobilisés par les élites pour marquer l’espace urbain, à tel point que l’absence du prince – lorsqu’il règne à distance – ne paraît pas entraver la vie de cour. En abordant aussi des villes de cour paradoxalement sans prince, cet ouvrage fait le pari de montrer que la cour n’est pas forcément toujours là où réside le prince.

This volume presents the first collection of essays dedicated to women as producers of visual and material culture in the Early Modern European courts, offering fresh insights into the careers of, among others, Caterina van Hemessen, Sofonisba Anguissola, Luisa Roldán, and Diana Mantuana. Also considered are groups of female makers, such as ladies-in-waiting at the seventeenth-century Medici court. Chapters address works by women who occupied a range of social and economic positions within and around the courts and across media, including paintings, sculpture, prints, and textiles. Both individually and collectively, the texts deepen understanding of the individual artists and courts highlighted and, more broadly, consider the variety of experiences of female makers across traditional geographic and chronological distinctions. The book is also accompanied by the "Global Makers: Women Artists in the Early Modern Courts" digital humanities project ), extending and expanding the work begun here.

Between the fifteenth and the eighteenth century, princely courts dominated the Italian political scene. These courts were effervescent centers of cultural production. As such, they became a model for European monarchies who imported Italian courtly forma del vivere ("style of life") to legitimize their power and to define social status. This phenomenon included architecture and painting, theater and music, manners and aesthetics, and all the objects, behaviors and beliefs that contributed to homogenize European culture in the age of the Old Regime. It involved a hemorrhage of art and a continuous circulation of people, texts and symbols. The foundational material for this process was classicism and its purpose was political. This delineates a new geography and chronology of a truly European cultural history. It also provides the key traits for the European cultural identity.
