Abstract

This book investigates Lorentzian structures in the four-dimensional space-time, supplemented either by a covector field of the time-direction or by a scalar field of the global time. Furthermore, it proposes a new metrizable model of gravity. In contrast to the usual General Relativity theory, where all ten components of the symmetric pseudo-metric are independent variables, the gravity model presented here essentially depends only on a single four-covector field, and is restricted to have only three-independent components. However, the author proves that the gravitational field, governed by the proposed model and generated by some massive body, resting and spherically symmetric in some coordinate system, is given by a pseudo-metric that coincides with the well known Schwarzschild metric from General Relativity. The Maxwell equations and electrodynamics are also investigated in the framework of the proposed model. In particular, the covariant formulation of electrodynamics of moving dielectrics and para/diamagnetic media is derived.

Abstract

This thesis makes significant advances towards an understanding of superconductivity in the cuprate family of unconventional, high-temperature superconductors. Even though the high-temperature superconductors were discovered over 35 years ago, there is not yet a general consensus on an acceptable theory of superconductivity in these materials. One of the early proposals suggested that collective magnetic excitations of the conduction electrons could lead them to form pairs, which in turn condense to form the superconducting state at a critical temperature Tc. Quantitative calculations of Tc using experimental data were, however, not available to verify the applicability of this magnetic mechanism. In this thesis, the author constructed an angle-resolved photoemission apparatus that could provide sufficiently accurate data of the electronic excitation spectra of samples in the normal state, data which was furthermore unusually devoid of any surface contamination. The author also applied the Bethe-Salpeter method to his uncommonly pristine and precise normal state data, and was able to predict the approximate superconducting transition temperatures of different samples. This rare combination of experiment with sophisticated theoretical calculations leads to the conclusion that antiferromagnetic correlations are a viable candidate for the pairing interaction in the cuprate superconductors.

Abstract

For advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in atmospheric, oceanic, and climate science, Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate Dynamics is an introductory textbook on the circulations of the atmosphere and ocean and their interaction, with an emphasis on global scales. It will give students a good grasp of what the atmosphere and oceans look like on the large-scale and why they look that way. The role of the oceans in climate and paleoclimate is also discussed. The combination of observations, theory and accompanying illustrative laboratory experiments sets this text apart by making it accessible to students with no prior training in meteorology or oceanography. * Written at a mathematical level that is appealing for undergraduates and beginning graduate students * Provides a useful educational tool through a combination of observations and laboratory demonstrations which can be viewed over the web * Contains instructions on how to reproduce the simple but informative laboratory experiments * Includes copious problems (with sample answers) to help students learn the material.

Abstract

The thesis gives the first experimental demonstration of a new quantum bit ("qubit") that fuses two promising physical implementations for the storage and manipulation of quantum information - the electromagnetic modes of superconducting circuits, and the spins of electrons trapped in semiconductor quantum dots - and has the potential to inherit beneficial aspects of both. This new qubit consists of the spin of an individual superconducting quasiparticle trapped in a Josephson junction made from a semiconductor nanowire. Due to spin-orbit coupling in the nanowire, the supercurrent flowing through the nanowire depends on the quasiparticle spin state. This thesis shows how to harness this spin-dependent supercurrent to achieve both spin detection and coherent spin manipulation. This thesis also represents a significant advancement to our understanding and control of Andreev levels and thus of superconductivity. Andreev levels, microscopic fermionic modes that exist in all Josephson junctions, are the microscopic origin of the famous Josephson effect, and are also the parent states of Majorana modes in the nanowire junctions investigated in this thesis. The results in this thesis are therefore crucial for the development of Majorana-based topological information processing.

Abstract

This book presents an overview of Classical Electrodynamics. Its second edition includes new chapters that pick up where the material from the first edition left off. The image method introduced in the first edition is expanded to series of images, using simple examples like a point charge or a charged wire between two grounded plates, as well as more relevant examples such as two charged conducting spheres and the force between them. The topic of complex functions is broadened with the introduction of conformal mapping. One new chapter introduces the method of separation of variables, including in Cartesian coordinates (box with sides at fixed voltages), in spherical coordinates (dielectric and conducting sphere, potential of a charged ring), in cylindrical coordinates (conducting wedge, cylinder in uniform field). It also presents the potentials and the fields for a point charge in motion, radiation by a point charge and by a dipole, radiation reaction. Two other chapters present updated lessons on the mass of the photon and search for monopoles. Examples and/or solvable problems are provided throughout.

Abstract

The laws of nature encompass the small, the large, the few, and the many. In this book, we are concerned with classical (i.e., not quantum) many-body systems, which refers to any microscopic or macroscopic system that contains a large number of interacting entities. The nearest-neighbor Ising model, originally developed in 1920 by Wilhelm Lenz, forms a cornerstone in our theoretical understanding of collective effects in classical many-body systems and is to date a paradigm for statistical physics. Despite its elegant and simplistic description, exact analytical results in dimensions equal and larger than two are difficult to obtain. Therefore, much work has been done to construct methods that allow for approximate, yet accurate, analytical solutions. One of these methods is the Bethe-Guggenheim approximation, originally developed independently by Hans Bethe and Edward Guggenheim in 1935. This approximation goes beyond the well-known mean field approximation and explicitly accounts for pair correlations between the spins in the Ising model. In this book, we embark on a journey to exploit the full capacity of the Bethe-Guggenheim approximation, in non-uniform and non-equilibrium settings. Throughout we unveil the non-trivial and a priori non-intuitive effects of pair correlations in the classical nearest-neighbor Ising model, which are taken into account in the Bethe-Guggenheim approximation and neglected in the mean field approximation.

Abstract

This second edition adds 46 new problems, for a total of 203. The solutions to certain “old” problems have been revised for improved clarity, in response to questions and comments from our students (second-year students in the Master’s in Physics program). Each problem is given a title indicating its relation to the various areas of physics or technology. By tackling the problems presented here, students are gently introduced to advanced topics such as unipolar and homopolar motors, magnetic monopoles, radiation pressure, angular momentum of light, bulk and surface plasmons, and radiation friction. We also address a number of tricky concepts and apparent ambiguities and paradoxes encountered in the classical theory of electromagnetism, with a particular focus on conservation laws and transformation properties between different frames of reference. At the same time, the book can be used as an introduction to applications of classical electromagnetism including cutting-edge topics like plasmonics, metamaterials, and light-driven propulsion. While unnecessary mathematical complexity is avoided, the new edition also provides a few introductory examples concerning elegant and powerful solution techniques. Hopefully the second edition offers an even better teaching tool for undergraduates in physics, mathematics, and electric engineering, and a valuable reference guide for students planning to work in optics, material science, electronics, and plasma physics.
