Au début de l'année 1992, la tâche paraissait gigantesque. En septembre 1992, coup de théâtre international : l'équipe française du professeur Daniel Cohen, qui depuis cinq ans mène à contre-courant ses recherches scientifiques, annonce qu'elle vient de terminer à elle seule la moitié de la cartographie du génome humain, qu'elle achèvera en 1993, ébranlant ainsi la stratégie des Américains, en retard de plusieurs années. Avec humour et passion, dans un langage clair qui bouscule les idées reçues, Daniel Cohen retrace cette prouesse humaine et scientifique. Il rend hommage a son maître, le prix Nobel de médecine jean Dausset, un esprit libre et inventif avec lequel il travaille en étroite collaboration. Il montre comment, pour défendre ses recherches, il crée des équipes pluridisciplinaires - roboticiens, mathématiciens, informaticiens, biologistes -, passionne les industriels, convainc les politiques. Dans ce livre vous découvrirez les facettes humaines, parfois intimes, mais toujours attachantes des personnages qui ont fait cette histoire. Daniel Cohen raconte notamment sa rencontre avec un homme prodigieux, déchiré par la mort de son enfant myopathe, Bernard Barataud, le promoteur du Téléthon, avec lequel il fonde le Généthon qui a permis de réaliser ce programme scientifique d'envergure internationale. L'exploration du génome humain nous fait entrer dans l'ère de la prévention des maladies. Dans le futur, l'homme sera probablement en mesure de modifier son patrimoine biologique. Cela n'est pas sans soulever des problèmes éthiques. Daniel Cohen est l'un des scientifiques les mieux placés pour évaluer ce qui, dans le domaine génétique, est possible ou non, et pour discuter des nouvelles responsabilités qui, d'ores et déjà, s'imposent aux citoyens. L'hérédité nous concerne tous. Le programme génome humain est un projet international, qui vise à lire intégralement les trois milliards de lettres chimiques constituant l'ADN de nos chromosomes, support de l'hérédité.
