Abstract

This book is intended as a preliminary work for a uniform description of language, especially overall organization and architecture of grammar and its connection with semantics. An array of general logical intuitions, concerning the initial requirements for building and interpreting compound expressions, stemming from Frege, Husserl and Ajdukiewicz, is spelled out to form a general framework, allowing for critical evaluation of today's leading paradigms, such as Generative Grammar, Montague Grammar or Type-Logical Grammar. The main message of the book is that categorial grammar is not only one of the competing theories of syntax, but - according to some general features - is the most plausible framework for logical syntax of natural language. With profound motivation the book proposes an original treatment of quantification and formulates insightful general principles of syntactic analysis.

Abstract

"Drawing on their wide experience as CLIL educators and researchers, the authors explore data collected in real CLIL classrooms from two interrelated perspectives: the CLIL classroom as an interactional context for developing language and content, and the genres and registers through which the meanings of the different academic subjects are enacted. From the analysis of this corpus of data, the authors provide a rich description of how CLIL students' language works and may be expected to develop". Abstract

It is a true honor to be asked to write an introduction to a book by Lex de Haan. I just hope I can give Lex the credit he deserves for his friendship, knowledge, enthusiasm, carpentry . . . and sheer energy in the many years we've been doing things in the Oracle world. Lex spent 14 years in Oracle, starting as an instructor in Oracle Netherlands, becoming initiator and coordinator of Oracle's excellent Technical Seminar business, and finally ending up in Oracle's Curriculum Development division as a manager for a bunch of very excellent course developers. He is never afraid to start up something new, to enter new and untried waters ¦ a personal trait he shares with about 0. 00001% of the global population. Then, finally, Lex started up for himself, and, of course, the company name had to reflect his twisted, funny way of thinking: Natural Join. Who else can get away with it, looking sto- faced and with just the slightest twinkle in his eyes, if you look really carefully? Since then Lex, as always, hasn't looked back but has worked nonstop as instructor all over Europe and the Middle East, and as writer. The book in front of you is, in fact, an update of a book he wrote many moons ago, and which has served as a textbook in various Dutch schools.

Abstract

When I first began coding SQLite in the spring of 2000, I never imagined that it would be so enthusiastically received by the programming community. Today, there are millions and millions of copies of SQLite running unnoticed inside computers and gadgets made by hundreds of companies from around the world. You have probably used SQLite before without realizing it. SQLite might be inside your new cell phone or MP3 player or in the set-top box from your cable company. At least one copy of SQLite is probably found on your home computer; it comes built in on Apple's Mac OS X and on most versions of Linux, and it gets added to Windows when you install any of dozens of third-party software titles. SQLite backs many websites thanks in part to its inclusion in the PHP5 programming language. And SQLite is also known to be used in aircraft avionics, modeling and simulation programs, industrial controllers, smart cards, decision-support packages, and medical information systems. Since there are no reporting requirements on the use of SQLite, there are without doubt countless other deployments that are unknown to me. Much credit for the popularity of SQLite belongs to Michael Owens. Mike's articles on SQLite in The Linux Journal (June 2003) and in The C/C++ Users Journal (March 2004) int- duced SQLite to countless programmers. The traffic at the SQLite website jumped noticeably after each of these articles appeared.
