Abstract

Focusing on the rule of Heraclius (610-643), this study examines the development of the Byzantine monarchy at the threshold between antiquity and the Middle Ages. It shows how the reigning Emperor responded to the domestic and external political challenges that endangered his rule and brought the Byzantine Empire to the brink of collapse.

Abstract

This volume addresses one of the most debated topics in the historiography of the Spanish Monarchy in the Early Modern Age: its political nature. It examines the most interesting aspects of the Hispanic polycentric model, which presents the Monarchy as a political entity composed of several interconnected units that not only interacted with the king, but also with each other. These connections contributed to the modulation of Court politics and the generation of new forms of collaboration, competition and negotiation. The analysis of four case studies, involving individuals, families and power groups that managed to move within or on the margins of institutional channels, between the Italian and Iberian territories of the Monarchy, allows us to interpret this political entity as something more than the simple juxtaposition of kingdoms under a single king. The result was a State capable of strengthening itself also through the interactions that took place between the local and global spheres thanks to the presence of an articulated system of networks.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines in detail the origins of ultraroyal hostility to the social and political changes rendered by the French Revolution. France has produced a variety of theories of decline, corresponding to the nation's changing political fortunes in Europe and the world. The Revolution represented another, at least temporary, victory of the state apparatus over local community and privilege, and it stimulated the longing, apparent in all parts of the country after the fall of Napoleon, for a return to older forms of society and government that were essentially provincial and rural. The stevedores of Marseille, the fisherman of Brittany, and the peasants of the Auvergne saw plainly enough that the Revolution had not solved the problems of poverty and economic distress. Like the nobles, the ex-parlementarians, and the descendants of local oligarchies, they were hostile to the ascendancy of Paris. On all levels of French society were those who selectively remembered the best of the Old Regime, dwelt on the most obvious failures of the Revolution's religious and welfare policies, and blamed facile utilitarians who did not understand tradition for the destruction of the pre-1789 institutions. This book examines in depth the form that ultraroyalism took in Toulouse.

Abstract

ACTION — as in begin, genesis, motion — is a collection of poems ultimately concerned with form, those lines drawn in the sand that give way to the profanity of the holy, the holiness of the profane. Throughout ACTION, Opal engages the constraints inherent to seemingly fixed forms. From living with rheumatoid arthritis, to feeling for the edges of a sonnet tradition, to wrestling with the tenets of historical theology, this collection demonstrates that the only way to honestly submit to a form is to rage against it. However, to assume that this rage is not a kind of explosive joy—a Barthesian jouissance—would be to miss the point of poems that Dean Young has described as “radiant affirmations of life and art.”

Abstract

Abstract

The meeting between America and Europe began a first historical period that would extend over three centuries, always marked by the differences between two different ways of understanding the relations of domination between the two. This tension, constantly present and expressed in multiple ways, transports us inexorably to a convulsive beginning of the 19th century. A historical moment marked by the rupture, in capital letters, associated with the fall of the Old Regime, of obsolete models of political, economic and social organization, of archaic ways of thinking and acting. In this context, the disagreement in America had been made clear for quite some time. The emancipation processes came to signify, therefore, the confirmation that the American system was in absolute decline. We believe that the set of contributions that make up this work -precisely because of its heterogeneity, because of its different approaches and because it never abandons the overall perspective- contributes as one more grain of sand to the debate and discussion about our common history, about the difficult times that were lived and that never left us.

Abstract

Abstract

Was bedeutet aber überhaupt "Restauration"? Jahrhunderts.
