Abstract

Focusing on the processes of accumulation, concentration and centralisation of capital, this book explains the transnationalisation of capital and its impact on Latin America and Brazil. The first chapter addresses the logic of these processes from a Marxian perspective. The second chapter shows how this movement of capital expands into some Latin American countries, and how it subsequently retracts in the 1990s process of global centralisation. The third chapter evaluates Latin American strategies to attract capital by taking a subordinate position to capital’s global movement. The last two chapters focus on Brazil's development strategy in the face of the alternating expansion and contraction of capital, and point out the vulnerability of Latin American countries when their development is subordinate to transnational capital. First published in Portuguese as Subordinação consentida: capital multinacional no processo de acumulação da América Latina e Brasil by Annablume Editora/Fapesp in 2006.

Abstract

This handbook offers readers various perspectives on globalization and multilateralism with Chinese characteristics. Its originality is derived from the hybrid approaches the handbook takes, where chapters provide complementary, intertwined, and multi-level analysis on the topic. Based on contributions of scholars and practitioners from a number of countries, the handbook helps readers to comprehend ongoing debates on the Belt and Road Initiative and global governance, within a shifting balance of world power, characterized by competing views between Western and Chinese norms, standards, values, and narratives. Split into three Parts, and consisting of 46 chapters, the handbook views globalization as comprehensive concept that benefits from the contributions of various disciplines such as geography, geo-economics, political science and international relations. In producing one of the most ambitious and updated outputs on the topic, the handbook as a whole seeks to discuss what globalization with Chinese characteristics looks like, and the role of the Belt and Road Initiative in this process. Abstract

Globalization effects nearly everyone and everything; and so, it does for networks and its different dimensions. Anna-Lena Bunse explores the network structure of migrant entrepreneurs in Bremen-Gröpelingen, and asks how informal networks for migrant entrepreneurs are structured and how migrant entrepreneurs can benefit from informal networks. It is shown how diaspora entrepreneurs in Gröpelingen communicate with each other and how this effects their businesses. The results highlight, that there are benefits for all diaspora entrepreneurs and their network partners, yet it also shows that they could use their networks in a more efficient way to optimize their businesses. Abstract

This book examines the evolving economic relationship between China and the West, in particular investment regimes and climates. How do their economic models differ, how do they interact, and what does it mean for growth and economic freedom? In recent years, the amount of Chinese FDI in Europe and the US has soared. Although European and American FDI in China is still significantly higher, the discussion about fair regulations for investors in both countries is subject of expanding debate. All this takes place in the middle of the negotiation of a new investment treaty with the European Union and prospects of a trade war between the US and China. This book gives Academics, Practitioners and Politicians “simple rules” for navigating these challenges with an eye to maximizing value and minimizing risk. Tim Wenniges is the Managing Director for International Affairs at SUEDWESTMETALL, the Baden-Wuerttemberg Employers’ Association of the Metal and Electrical Industry. Before he was country director of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in China. In both positions he works to build and explore bilateral Sino-German ties. With his work and high-level study of the Chinese economy and new possibilities for the Sino-German relationship, his work is of critical value in the development of the contours of Sino-European trade in the decades to come. He is a public speaker and bridgebuilder between Germany and China. He studied and worked for the last 20 years at the interface of industry and politics in several parts of Europe, the US, Indonesia and China. Walter Lohman has been Director of the Asian Studies Center at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC, for the last 12 years, and an adjunct professor at Georgetown University for six. Prior to this, he was Executive Director of the US-ASEAN Business Council and spent seven years working on Capitol Hill, for Senator John McCain and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. .

Abstract

The book sheds light on trade policies of developing economies that joined the multilateral trading system after establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995, once known as the recently acceded members (RAMs). Its detailed case studies on Georgia, the People’s Republic of China, Viet Nam and Ecuador examine their engagement in accession and Doha Round negotiations and, where relevant, dispute settlement at the WTO. Using the economic theories of trade agreements and negotiations as a guide for intellectual inquiries, this book assesses motivations accounting for the RAMs’ evolving behaviors in the multilateral trading system. The first two chapters present background and overview, followed by four chapters on country-specific case studies. The book is concluded with the last chapter that provides one possible explanation of why the Doha Round has been faced with deadlocks while accession and dispute settlement have been working effectively. Kenji Takamiya is an economist of a multilateral development bank, specialized in emerging markets, low-income countries, and transition economies. He has Ph.D. in politics and international studies and M.Phil. in international relations, both from the University of Cambridge, as well as M.A. in international and development economics from Yale University. .

Abstract

This book is a collection of essays from MacroPolo, the think tank of the Paulson Institute in Chicago. The picture of China that emerges in this volume is one built from the ground up, across economics, politics, and technology. In addition, because China’s rise has important global dimensions, a US-China section composed of two essays is included, which combine both a macro perspective and a view of the bilateral relationship through the history of a significant multinational firm. Finally, this volume will include an original introduction and conclusion by Damien Ma, editor and co-founder of MacroPolo. The essays are analytically driven and provide novel perspectives, context, granular data, and policy conclusions that get lost in the daily churn of news cycles. None of the essays in this volume focuses on national security or geopolitics. Rather, the volume grapples squarely with how China’s domestic economic, political, and technological developments have transformed not only itself but also the world at large. .

Abstract

This book summarizes the evolution of modern macroeconomics (New Consensus Macroeconomics, NCM) and proposes a new approach to theoretical and empirical analysis, which is based on a recently developed dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model. Dynamic macroeconomic analysis in emerging market economies is challenging, and of growing importance in the global economy, where emerging markets are becoming more and more influential. Clearly, a deeper understanding of the inner workings of emerging economies, particularly with respect to their socioeconomic structure and the urbanization process, is needed. The book’s extends the NCM/DSGE model to better account for significant economic and social features in emerging market economies. In particular, household heterogeneities and social stratification are explicitly incorporated into the framework proposed here, substantially enhancing the comprehensiveness of the model economy, and allowing it to better account for underlying social structure in emerging economies. Furthermore, financial and housing markets have not been considered sufficiently in either the advanced or emerging economy literature, an oversight this book remedies. As such, it makes an original and valuable contribution to the field, and a direction for future research. Daniel Lukui Jia holds a Ph.D. from Cambridge University. His research interests include macroeconomics, dynamic modeling, money and banking, and public finance.

Abstract

Since 1945, the liberal-democratic model of capitalism spread across the globe, ultimately prevailing over communism. Over the past two decades, a new statist-authoritarian model has begun diffusing across East Asia. Rather than rejecting capitalism, authoritarian leaders harness it to uphold their rule. Based on extensive research of East Asia's largest corporations and sovereign wealth funds, this book argues that the most aggressive version of this model does not belong to China. Rather, it can be found in Malaysia and Singapore. Although these countries are small, the implications are profound because one-third of all countries in the world possess the same type of regime. With an increasing number of these authoritarian regimes establishing sovereign wealth funds, their ability to intervene in the corporate sectors of other countries is rapidly expanding.

This volume investigates the durable nature of financial institutions, from the Middle Ages to the present day, and argues that reform should take place through innovation in institutional design rather than regulation.
