Abstract

This book describes the design and internals of the MOSIX distributed operating system. MOSIX, an acronym for Multicomputer Operating System for UNIX, integrates a cluster of loosely integrated computers into a virtual single-machine UNIX environment. The main property of MOSIX is the high degree of integration among the processors, which may include personal workstations and shared memory and non-shared memory multiprocessors, connected by fast communication links. This integration includes network transparency, cooperation between the processors to provide services across machine boundaries, support of dynamic configuration, and system-initiated load balancing by process migration. Another property of MOSIX is the ability to scale up the system configuration to encompass a large number of computers. The development of MOSIX was begun in 1981. The book is intended primarily for readers who are interested in distributed and multiprocessor systems. The reader is assumed to have some knowledge in programming and operating systems, preferably UNIX. Readers without this background will still benefit from thetechniques and algorithms discussed.

Abstract

This volume contains the proceedings of the twelfth Ada-Europe conference, held in France in 1993. The French name "Ada sans fronti res" (the only French words in the book) symbolizes the unlimitedness and novelty of Ada, as well as Europe-wide interest. Many papers relate to Ada-9X, the new standard that the Ada coimmunity is close to achieving after worldwide consultation and debate about requirements, specification, anddetailed definition. Their focus is on management, real-time, and compiler validation. Part of the conference was on object orientation, together with various issues relating to the general structure of the language, including exceptions to a certain use of genericity and heterogeneous data, efficiency, formal requirements and CASEs, and comparison with a competitor language. A third part relates to real-time, past with performance measurement, present with certification andapplications, and future with the ExTRA project and 9X.

Abstract

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the First International Symposiumorganized by the Japan Society for Software Science and Technology. The symposium was held in Kanazawa, Japan, November 4-6, 1993 and attracted many researchers from academia and industry as well as ambitioned practitioners. Object technologies, in particular object-oriented programming, object-oriented databases, and software object bases, currently attract much attention and hold a great promise of future research and development in diverse areas of advanced software. The volume contains besides 6 invited presentations by renown researchers and 25 contributed papers carefully selected by an internationalprogram committee from a total of 92 submissions.

Abstract

Technological advances are revolutionizing computers and networks to supportdigital video and audio, leading to new design spaces in computer systems and applications. Under the surface of exciting multimedia technologies liesa mine of research problems. This volume presents the proceedings of an international workshop which brought together the leading researchers in allaspects of multimedia computing, communication, storage, and applications. The field of multimedia has witnessed an explosive growth in the last few years and the selection of papers for this workshop was extremely competitive. The volume contains 26 full papers and 14 short papers selected from 128 contributions, organized into parts on: network and operating system support for multimedia; multimedia on-demand services; media synchronization; distributed multimedia systems; network andoperating system support for multimedia; multimedia models, frameworks, and document architectures; and multimedia workstations and platforms.

Abstract

This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Advanced Teleservices and High-Speed Communication Architectures (IWACA '94), held in Heidelberg, Germany in September 1994. The IWACA Workshop is a platform for the exchange among researchers and developers from both the multimedia applications and the high-speed telecommunication communities. The book presents revised versions of the 36 papers accepted for presentation at the workshop. They cover several aspects of multimedia applications and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), and focus on ATM-LANs and ATM for the wide area high-performance network of the future.

Abstract

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the First International Eurospace/Ada-Europe Symposium, held in Copenhagen in September 1994; this symposium series is the merger of the two conference series Ada in Aerospace and Ada-Europe. The 42 papers accepted for presentation address general Ada-related software engineering aspects as well as Ada language issues; the majority of the papers are stimulated by research and development done in the aerospace and aircraft industry. Among the topics covered are compiler issues, safety, criticality and formal methods, object-orientation, management and training, life cycle, reuse, Ada-libraries, run-time, and real-time aspects.

Abstract

This monograph presents the still young, but already large and very active interdisciplinary realm of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) in a systematic and well-balanced way. Besides technical progress also the cultural, social, legal, psychological and economic aspects of CSCW are discussed. The book makes accessible a wealth of information and culminates in the development and detailed discussion of a "Collaboratory" suitable to fulfil the needs of scientific cooperation in Europe. The book addresses CSCW research and development professionals as well as the general scientist interested in CSCW-based scientific cooperation. The bibliography with its more than 600 entries and the subject index are particularly comprehensive and helpful.
