Abstract

Nora E. Sánchez Gassen analyses how demographic trends and electoral law have influenced the German electorate in the past and projects their future impact. A set of population projections illustrates how the size and age structure of the electorate will change until 2030 due to ongoing demographic changes. Additional analyses reveal how reforms of electoral law and citizenship law could be used to influence these trends. Overall, the author combines demographic methods with democratic theory in order to investigate a topic that has so far received little attention in discussions on demographic change: the future of the democratic system. Contents The influence of legal and demographic changes on the development of the electorate Demographic projections: The influence of demographic trends on the development of the electorate Policy scenarios: The influence of legal changes on the development of the electorate The development of the German electorate: Trends and consequences Target Groups Political Scientists (areas of study: democratic theory, political systems and institutions, electoral studies) and Demographers (areas of study: population projections, population ageing, migration/integration) Persons working in ministries, parties and public administration, interest groups (migrant organisations, foundations and institutions who are interested in the rights of future generations) The Author Nora E. Sánchez Gassen is a Research Fellow at the ESRC Research Centre for Population Change of the University of Southampton (UK).

Abstract

This book offers a novel and parsimonious framework to help understand Hong Kong’s lengthy democratic transition by analyzing the electoral dynamics of the city’s competitive authoritarian political system, where pro-Beijing and pro-democracy parties have struggled to keep each other in check. The author demonstrates how a relatively liberal media environment has shaped the electoral incentives of the opposition and the pro-establishment elite differently, which has helped the latter improve its basis of electoral support. The political explanation the book puts forward seeks to shed new light on why many autocracies are interested in regularly holding elections that are considered somewhat competitive. This book will be of great interest not only to specialists in comparative studies of democratization, but also to all those concerned with Hong Kong’s democratic transition.

Abstract

"Small states are mostly excluded from comparative research, and also from studies on local politics. This outstanding book effectively fills this void by providing the first comprehensive analysis of subnational governance in small states. It is full of fascinating findings, and productively combines a comparative analysis of small states around the world with an in-depth analysis of local government in Iceland." – Wouter Veenendaal, Assistant Professor, Institute of Political Science, Leiden University, Belgium This book explores the development of subnational government in small states, using Iceland as a model and comparing it with small states of similar population size as well as those with larger populations. The book examines subnational government from the perspective of small state theory, providing a comprehensive overview of the basic data on subnational government for all small states with between 100,000 and 1 million inhabitants. It presents Iceland as a model for decentralization in small states, providing detailed information on the country’s organization at the subnational level, and highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of decentralizing tasks from central to subnational government. Demonstrating the difference population size makes when it comes to successfully decentralizing tasks to subnational governments, this book is intended for scholars, students and practitioners alike. Eva Marín Hlynsdóttir is an Associate Professor of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Iceland. She teaches courses in Public Administration and Political Science and has researched political and organizational leadership, local governance and public administration. Her latest publication is Gender in Organization: The Icelandic Female Council Manager.

Abstract

This book asks, 'what are the implications of blurring genres for the discipline of Political Science, and for Area Studies?' It argues novelists and playwrights provide a better guide for political scientists than the work of physicists. It restates the intrinsic value of the Humanities and Social Sciences and builds bridges between the two territories. The phrase blurring genres covers both genres of thought and of presentation. Genres of thought refers to such theoretical approaches as post structuralism, cultural studies, and especially interpretive thought. Part 1 explores genres of thought, focusing on the use of narratives. Specific examples include the narratives of post-truth political cultures; narratives in Canadian general elections; autoethnography as a new research tool; and novels as a way of understanding economic development. Part 2 emphasises genres of presentation and focuses on the visual arts. The chapters cover: photography in British political history, the architecture of American statehouses and city halls, design, comics, and using the creative arts to improve policy practice. This book is interdisciplinary and should have an appeal beyond political science to area studies specialists and others in the humanities. It is an advanced text, so it is aimed primarily at academics and postgraduates. R. A. W. Rhodes is Professor of Government (Research) at the University of Southampton, UK, and Director of the Centre for Political Ethnography. Susan Hodgett is the founding Professor of Area Studies at the University of East Anglia, UK.

Abstract

"Drawing on sophisticated Marxist categories of analysis, Australia's premier scholar of urban studies shows how complex flows of capital impact intricate processes of class formation and fragmentation. Berry's brilliant insights into contemporary urban power dynamics demonstrate the relevance of classical sociological perspectives for our globalizing world. Highly recommended!" - Manfred B. Steger, Professor of Sociology at The University of Hawai'i-Manoa, author of Globalization: A Very Short Introduction 6th Ed. (2020) "The use value of theory shines brilliantly in Mike Berry's realist reading of Marx's materialist dialectics. Amid world-wide wails and finger-pointing over the price of housing, this eminently readable tome by an exceptionally well-regarded housing analyst accurately casts the home in structural terms as a vehicle of the advance of capital." - Anitra Nelson, Honorary Principal Fellow, the Informal Urbanism Research Hub (InfUr-), University of Melbourne, Australia and author of Beyond Money (2022) This book provides the first coherent Marxist analysis of the central importance of housing in the social reproduction of capitalism as a whole. Rather than consigning housing to the sidelines, Berry argues that the circulation of capital and revenues though housing and the built environment helps explain how the capital-labour relation constrains housing outcomes while also being reproduced on an extended scale. He shows how housing is provided by the intervention of building, property and interest-bearing capital fractions; how the land question can be explained by a theory of urban land rent, drawing on Marx's categories of differential and monopoly rent; how housing is vital to the extended reproduction of labour power, while also creating a semi-separate sphere of 'home' in which gender and demographic factors overlay and accentuate social class position. The modes, impact and drivers of state intervention in housing provision are seen to modify the patterns and pace of capital circulation through housing and the urban built environment with implications for shifts in class fragmentation and power relations. Mike Berry is Emeritus Professor of Urban Studies and Public Policy in the Centre for Urban Research at RMIT University, Australia.
