This book is a pioneering analysis of the deliberative systems approach in Taiwan, extending an understanding of Taiwanese democratic politics and consolidating links between theoretical development and a practical application of deliberative practices. As a front-runner of new democracies in Asia and a relatively open society, Taiwan provides a model for deliberative governance, with a view towards institutional innovation and increasing democratisation. This book considers how components within the intricate web of micro- and macro- deliberative systems perform different functions, complement each other, and contribute both to policy change and democratic innovation. Specific cases are provided – such as participatory budgeting in Taipei City and the government-academia alliance model – to demonstrate the long-term systemic effects of mini-publics and citizen actions. In addition, the book proposes the possibility of deliberative democracy for other countries in the world, alongside various policy issues, including mini-publics, e-participation, co-governance, citizen science, negotiation mechanisms, and the deliberative practices of indigenous peoples.

The paper draws from Sergio Caruso's reflections that the 'extension' and 'intensification' of citizenship are inseparable from democracy. Within this framework, it questions how innovative formulations of democracy such as so-called 'deliberative arenas' can contribute to the strengthening of citizenship. Specific attention is devoted to the public debate on major works, a privileged field of inquiry for some assessments of the effectiveness of participation guaranteed by such instruments.

Citizens' Assemblies (CAs) are flourishing around the world. Quite often composed of randomly selected citizens, CAs, arguably, come as a possible answer to contemporary democratic challenges. Democracies worldwide are indeed confronted with a series of disruptive phenomena such as a widespread perception of distrust and growing polarization as well as low performance. Many actors seek to reinvigorate democracy with citizen participation and deliberation. CAs are expected to have the potential to meet this twofold objective. But, despite deliberative and inclusive qualities of CAs, many questions remain open. The increasing popularity of CAs call for a holistic reflection and evaluation on their origins, current uses and future directions. The De Gruyter Handbook of Citizens' Assemblies showcases the state of the art around the study of CAs and opens novel perspectives informed by multidisciplinary research and renewed thinking about deliberative participatory processes. It discusses the latest theoretical, empirical, and methodological scientific developments on CAs and offers a unique resource for scholars, decision-makers, practitioners, and curious citizens to better understand the qualities, purposes, promises but also pitfalls of CAs.

Among the many sources used by Boccaccio in his scholarly work Genealogia deorum gentilium, there are also the Homeric poems, made available to the author thanks to Leonzio Pilato's Latin translation. What is interesting is that besides the Latin text of Iliad and Odyssey, he makes use also of Leonzio's glosses written in the margins of his autograph manuscripts. In the wake of Agostino Pertusi's pioneering study, this paper traces a link between Leonzio's glosses on the Odyssey (Venezia, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, gr. IX 29) and many passages of the Genealogia where Leonzio is quoted as a source. The analysis is structured in three parts, i.e. the quotation of Boccaccio's passage, the text of the source and a detailed commentary on its use.

Through our experience during a large-scale public engagement exercise in Chile we draw conclusions to adapt and improve the Critical Debate Model to an online format. We highlight the importance of epistemic opposition and structured annotation for the execution of debates, while also exploring the possibilities of automated analysis using Natural Language Processing. We conclude by describing how an online version of the Critical Debate Model could be implemented.
