Author of Architettura del medioevo in Sardegna which won him the Premio Nazionale Olivetti in 1956, Raffaello Delogu was an art historian and Commissioner for Antiquities and Monuments in Sardinia, Abruzzo and Sicily. His correspondence with one of the most eminent Italian writers of the second half of the twentieth century, as transcribed and lavishly annotated here by Monica Graceffa, reveals him not only as a committed intellectual devoted to the study of ancient and modern art, but also as a caustic and playful friend. His dialogue with Giuseppe Dessí commenced in their youth, when Dessí was an amateur painter on the way to maturity, who instead rapidly developed into a mature writer and attentive connoisseur of all forms of art. In addition to their studies and mutual friends (including Claudio Varese and Maria Lai), they also shared an interest in painting and in what Dessí was experiencing (his moves, his political passion) and what he was writing (fiction, drama, essays); important in this regard are the letters touching on the collaboration of both on the Sardinian issue of Pietro Calamandrei's «Il Ponte».

Raphael's Poetics makes the connection between the world famous and the unknown; it reconstructs the visual grammar that underlies the famous works of Raphael and which derives from the classical and contemporary Latin poetry that was so omnipresent in his surroundings but is now largely forgotten. By focusing on principles that from the basis of poetry Rijser explains the context in which Raphael's works were functioning, and arrives at an interpretation that they may have had for their intended audience. Highly innovative, thanks to the emphasis on a literary standpoint while looking at visual objects, Rijsers research results in a truly interdisciplinary methodology.

"This volume revisits Raphael’s famous Vatican ‘Rooms’ on the occasion of the quincentennial of the artist’s death. It introduces new scholarship that addresses questions of meaning and invention, artistic process and design, patronage and ritual, and workshop collaborations. With all rooms and details published in color, including ceilings and basamenti, it constitutes an essential resource for further study of these important Renaissance artworks.Painted between 1508 and 1527, Raphael's Vatican Stanze are counted among the greatest masterpieces in Western art. For centuries, they have served as formative touchstones for artistic definition, debate, and theory. Over the last several decades, Raphael’s legacy has enjoyed renewed interest and study. Until now, however, there have been few comprehensive accounts of the Vatican apartments and their artistic design. Spanning the papacies of Julius II, Leo X, and Clement VII, the suite of stanze is as much a witness of the Raphael’s transformative methods and style as it is a magnificent testament of papal traditions, trials, and triumph. The recent quincentennial of the artist's death brings with it a fresh opportunity to reappraise these canonical works. In celebration of this occasion, this volume offers new interpretations of Raphael’s Vatican paintings, addressing questions of meaning and invention, artistic process and design, patronage and ritual, and workshop collaborations. Striving to sustain the cooperative ideals famously embodied by the young artist and his circles, the volume’s essays revisit these significant spaces, traversing the Stanza della Segnatura, the Stanza d’Eliodoro, the Stanza dell’Incendio, and the Sala di Costantino, as well as other related Vatican venues and influences. In so doing, they illuminate new issues regarding Raphael’s praxis, experience, and critical fortune for specialists and students alike."
