Abstract

Michael Faraday, a self-taught errand boy of humble origins with no particular knowledge of mathematics, became one of the greatest Englishmen of all times. With simple determination and extraordinary insight he was able to make the scientific discoveries on which most of the technology of the twentieth century is based. His life and works have profoundly influenced contemporary thought, inspiring and complementing the work of other great minds, such as Clerk Maxwell and Albert Einstein. John Meurig Thomas is continuing a tradition of popularisation of science that has a shining example in Michael Faraday; Sir Thomas has the merit of illustrating the history and scientific work of this philosopher of nature with a simple and at the same time accurate style, which is accessible to all. Faraday’s fascinating and detailed story is enriched with a series of drawings, photographs and letters, mostly unpublished documents.

Abstract

Abstract

The book presents a selection of the works presented during various encounters held in sites connected with the life of Paolo Mantegazza, aimed at retrieving and valorising his cultural legacy. An eclectic figure - scientist, novelist, anthropologist and politician - Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910) played a leading role in Italian society and the cultural scene of the late nineteenth century. The contributions of academics from different disciplines enable us to reconstruct both the great variety of the man’s interests and curiosities, and the strict methodological rigour that guided his entire scientific production and is today the most evident sign of his contemporary relevance.

Abstract

This book, the result of a lengthy labour of cataloguing and research, continues the indexing and recording of the unpublished epistolary material conserved in the Dessí fond, launched in 2003 by Chiara Andrei with the edition of the family correspondence (Firenze, FUP). Now, through 1,900 letters from friends and readers, Francesca Nencioni offers a different and more ample overview of the fundamental stages in the life and works of the writer, focusing above all on the years of his university training in Pisa. Of particular interest is the appendix of carefully annotated unpublished texts, which offers 19 letters from Dessí to friends and scholars, the complete two-way correspondence with Walter Binni, and the letters sent to the friend and disciple of the great historian, Delio Cantimori. Abstract

Abstract

"This volume extends and deepens our understanding of Translator Studies by charting new territory in terms of theory, methods and concepts. The focus is on literary translators, their roles, identities, and personalities. The book introduces pertinent translator-centered approaches in four sections: historical-biographical studies, social-scientific and process-oriented methods and approaches that use paratexts or translations to study literary translators. Drawing on a variety of concepts, such as identity, role, self, posture, habitus, and voice, the various chapters showcase forgotten literary translators and shed new light on some well-known figures; they examine literary translators not as functioning units but as human beings in their uniqueness. Literary Translator Studies as a subdiscipline of Translation Studies demonstrates how exploring the cultural, social, psychological, and cognitive facets of translatorial subjects contributes to a holistic understanding of translation"--

Abstract
