Searching for information on locally, nationally or internationally renowned amateur or professional photographers working in Belgium before the Second World War? Maybe you will find some information on the internet, but still a lot has only been published in print. This printed information is very scattered and difficult to find. It may have been published in journals on culture and art, on heritage, on local and general history, on photography and history of photography, in catalogues of collections and exhibitions, in reference works, monographs and theses. 'Belgian Photographers 1839-1939' provides an overview of printed publications published after 1945 about Belgian photographers active from the discovery of photography until the Second World War. It presents a chronological bibliography, an author index and-most importantly- a completely comprehensive photographer index. This means that the references of all publications in which a particular photographer is mentioned, can be found in the bibliography. Definitely this book will be an essential guide for all those with an interest in the history of photography in Belgium, including photo and art historians, heritage researchers, genealogists and archivists. Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) is considered one of the pioneers of modern architecture: he is world-famous for his beautiful buildings, furniture, utensils and typographical creations. Van de Velde, however, is much less well-known as a painter and draughtsman. Nevertheless, he had a lot of talent, especially as a draughtsman: his drawings bear witness to great originality and sincerity. Ten years after his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1880 to 1883, Van de Velde exchanged painting for the applied arts and architecture, fields in which he would build a brilliant career. His enormous output in the architectural field ensures that there is little interest in his painting work - that attention only comes much later. Most of Van de Velde's pencil drawings and pastels were made in Wechelderzande - a small village in the Kempen, in Kalmthout and in Knokke-Heist. He also drew landscapes in Weimar and South Tyrol. Despite the large number of exhibitions devoted to Henry van de Velde, few paid sufficient attention to his paintings and drawings. It was only after his death in 1957 that interest in his creations as a painter emerged. This English-language catalogue of his works - with a trilingual introduction by Xavier Tricot, author of the catalogues of James Ensor's paintings and of Fernand Khnopff's and Léon Spilliaert's prints - outlines Henry van de Velde's fascinating career as a painter and gifted draughtsman on the basis of some 60 paintings and 230 drawings. Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) est considéré comme l'un des pionniers de l'architecture moderne : il est mondialement connu pour ses magnifiques bâtiments, meubles, ustensiles et créations typographiques. Van de Velde est toutefois beaucoup moins connu en tant que peintre et dessinateur. Pourtant, il avait beaucoup de talent, surtout en tant que dessinateur : ses dessins témoignent d'une grande originalité et sincérité. Dix ans après sa formation à l'Académie royale des Beaux-Arts d'Anvers, de 1880 à 1883, Van de Velde troque la peinture pour les arts appliqués et l'architecture, domaines dans lesquels il fera une brillante carrière. Son énorme production dans le domaine de l'architecture fait que l'on s'intéresse peu à son travail de peintre - cette intérêt ne vient que beaucoup plus tard. La plupart des dessins au crayon et des pastels de Van de Velde ont été réalisés à Wechelderzande - un petit village de la Campine -, à Kalmthout et à Knokke-Heist. Il a également dessiné des paysages à Weimar et dans le Tyrol du Sud. Malgré le grand nombre d'expositions consacrées à Henry van de Velde, peu ont accordé une place suffisante à ses peintures et dessins. Ce n'est qu'après sa mort en 1957 que l'intérêt pour ses créations en tant que peintre s'est manifesté. Ce catalogue de ses œuvres retrace la fascinante carrière d'Henry van de Velde en tant que peintre et dessinateur de talent sur la base de quelque 60 peintures et 230 dessins.
