The bishop was a figure of unparalleled importance in the tenth and eleventh centuries, as he married the advantages of his noble birth to the sacramental and pastoral role of bishop, drawing upon the resultant range of powers to intervene in all areas of life. Scholarship on the episcopate in this period, however, has tended to cluster around two themes: the role of bishops in the fragmentation of the Carolingian Empire and the critiques of these bishops levied by certain church reformers. This book moves beyond these subjects and examines the full scope of bishops’ activities in southwest France, as they ruled their cathedrals, interacted with lay powers, patronized religious communities, and wrestled with the complex nature of their office.

En ce temps-là, les évêques, couverts de leur cotte de mailles et armés d'une massue, n’hésitaient pas à participer aux batailles que se livraient les princes. Odon, évêque de Bayeux, et Geoffroi de Montbray évêque de Coutances, furent présents à Hastings et ne se contentèrent pas de combattre l'adversaire avec les seules armes de la prière. Souvent issus d’illustres familles aristocratiques, ils jouèrent un rôle capital dans la vie du duché de Normandie et dans le royaume anglo-normand. Mais ces évêques, bien installés dans la vie du siècle, ne délaissèrent nullement leurs responsabilités d’hommes d’Église : ils entreprirent de restaurer la vie religieuse, favorisèrent les fondations monastiques, se firent bâtisseurs de cathédrales et créèrent des centres de vie intellectuelle : certains furent même de remarquables savants, à l’exemple de Gilbert Maminot, évêque de Lisieux. De toutes ces personnalités étonnantes du xie siècle une s’impose avec plus de relief encore : Geoffroi de Montbray, évêque de Coutances pendant près de cinquante ans, de 1048 à 1093, qui fut un collaborateur efficace de Guillaume le Conquérant et qui édifia une magnifique cathédrale grâce notamment à l’argent offert par les aventuriers normands établis en Italie du Sud.

Der Predigt in der Karolingerzeit hat die historische Forschung bisher wenig Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet, obwohl sie in der Gesetzgebung seit der Admonitio generalis von 789 eine große Rolle spielte. In diesem Text forderte der fränkische König Karl der Große nicht nur die Bischöfe und Priester auf zu predigen, sondern gab gleichzeitig auch die Inhalte vor. Tatsächlich setzt im letzten Viertel des 8. Jahrhunderts eine reiche Überlieferung von Predigthandschriften ein. Auf Basis dieser Überlieferung würdigt das Buch erstmals umfassend die gesellschaftliche Bedeutung, die der Predigt zur Zeit Karls des Großen zukam: Es untersucht ihr Verhältnis zu den Kapitularien und beleuchtet dabei ihre bisher kaum beachtete Funktion als politisches Instrument im Reich Karls des Großen. Many sermon manuscripts were created around 800 CE over the course of the Carolingian reform movement, but until now, historical researchers have largely overlooked them. The presentation analyzes selected sermon collections to reveal their importance as a medium for implementing reforms at the local level, thereby making them an important instrument of Carolingian rule.
