Dans la pratique philologique, la critique, qui établit l’authenticité du texte et l’herméneutique, qui en dégage le sens, sont deux opérations solidaires. Ce modèle s’est vu élevé à la réflexion, dès la fin du xviiie siècle en Allemagne, par les auteurs de la génération romantique, Friedrich Schlegel, Schleiermacher et Ast. Le projet de réunir "philologie et philosophie" résume leur tentative, originale par rapport aux philosophies postkantiennes. Car ces auteurs cherchent à penser l’antinomie entre la critique et l’herméneutique, la mise à distance dans le jugement et l’expérience d’une appartenance première. Suivant des perspectives distinctes, ils ont conçu une théorie philosophique de l’interprétation, depuis le cadre d’une encyclopédie philologique. Mais cette théorie ne s’est pas préparée à l’écart de tout exercice. Depuis la pratique philologique jusqu’à l’invention d’un nouvel art de la critique littéraire propre au premier romantisme d’Iéna, il s’agit toujours de l’autoréflexion d’une pratique interprétative, de l’effort fourni pour en énoncer les fondements et la portée. Le choix des textes retenus vise à mettre en évidence cette double perspective, en reconstituant ainsi l’arc allant du jugement critique singulier (sur la Lucinde ou le Philoctète) à la recomposition du sens de grands ensembles textuels (Boccace ou Lessing) et menant à la proposition d’une théorie cohérente. Entre le jugement critique et la relation herméneutique partant de la reconnaissance de l’historicité du sens, c’est le projet d’une encyclopédie des sciences de l’esprit qui cherche ici ses fondements théoriques.

Although influential in his own day, Karl Leonhard Reinhold's contribution to late 18th and early 19th century thought has long been overshadowed by the towering presence of Immanuel Kant, the thinker whose ideas he helped to interpret and disseminate. Today, however, a more nuanced understanding of Reinhold's contribution to post-Kantian thought is emerging. Apart from his exposition of Kant's critical philosophy, which played a significant role in the development of German idealism, Reinhold's role in the intellectual movement of Enlightenment and his contributions to early linguistic philosophy are now receiving scholarly attention. In the English-speaking world, where few translations of his work have been attempted, Reinhold has mostly been overlooked. This imbalance is corrected in the present work: the first translation into English of Reinhold's major work of philosophy, the New Theory of the Human Capacity for Representation (1789). The translators provide an overview of the main currents of thought which informed Reinhold's philosophical project, as well as notes on his reading of Kant and other important thinkers of Reinhold's day. A glossary of key terms, a bibliography of scholarly work on Reinhold and suggestions for further reading are also included.

Kant's Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science is one of the most difficult but also most important of Kant's works. Published in 1786 between the first (1781) and second (1787) editions of the Critique of Pure Reason, the Metaphysical Foundations occupies a central place in the development of Kant's philosophy, but has so far attracted relatively little attention compared with other works of Kant's critical period. Michael Friedman's book develops a new and complete reading of this work and reconstructs Kant's main argument clearly and in great detail, explaining its relationship to both Newton's Principia and eighteenth-century scientific thinkers such as Euler and Lambert. By situating Kant's text relative to his pre-critical writings on metaphysics and natural philosophy and, in particular, to the changes Kant made in the second edition of the Critique, Friedman articulates a radically new perspective on the meaning and development of the critical philosophy as a whole.

Paul Ricœur a toujours entretenu un rapport passionné avec la philosophie allemande, jusqu’à entreprendre la traduction des Idées directrices de Husserl en captivité dans un stalag. S’il est connu pour son rôle clé dans l’acclimatation de la phénoménologie husserlienne en France, sa lecture de la philosophie allemande antérieure à Husserl a été non moins intense et influente. Lui-même a parfois défini sa position comme un « kantisme post-hégélien ». Mais il a su également mobiliser les pensées de Marx, de Nietzsche et de Freud comme des moments critiques indispensables à son projet intellectuel. Enfin, il a reconnu toute l’importance de Schleiermacher et de Dilthey en tant que fondateurs de la philosophie herméneutique. Le présent ouvrage se propose d’examiner comment Ricœur s’approprie l’héritage de la philosophie allemande du XVIIIe et du XIXe siècle, et comment, à travers elle, il crée une œuvre extraordinairement originale. Quelles sont les règles implicites auxquelles ses lectures obéissent ? En quoi lui permettent-elles d’explorer ses propres intuitions ? Qu’ont changé ces lectures dans la réception de la philosophie allemande en milieu francophone ? Telles sont les questions auxquelles cet ouvrage entend répondre.
