Since the collapse of the global financial markets in 2008, economists and commentators have looked back to the Great Depression of the 1930s to discover similarities and solutions for recovery. Contributing to this crucial moment, renowned economist A.E. Safarian has added a new preface to his classic study of the Great Depression, discussing the present crisis and suggesting ways in which future crises might be avoided. Essential reading for economists, historians, and politicians, The Canadian Economy in the Great Depression is the definitive study of the country's worst period of economic failure, covering the period from the stock market's rise in the roaring 1920s, through the Great Crash, to the destitution of the 1930s and the eventual economic recovery. Countless students, journalists, and political leaders, including current US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, have used it to better comprehend the complicated nature and history of the markets. With remarkable clarity Safarian untangles the web of relations that led to - and sustained - the Great Depression while also examining the economic controls and stimuli put in place during the Depression and how and why these measures failed. This new edition introduces The Canadian Economy in the Great Depression to a new generation, particularly those concerned about the possibility of another Great Depression.

This book explores the housing problem throughout the 70 years of Soviet history, looking at changing political ideology on appropriate forms of housing under socialism, successive government policies on housing, and the meaning and experience of 'home' for Soviet citizens. She examines the use of housing to alter gender relations, and the ways in which domestic space was differentially experienced by men and women. Much of Attwood's material comes from Soviet magazines and journals, which enables her to demonstrate how official ideas on housing and daily life changed during the course of the

More than any other issue in Islamic theology, anthropomorphism (tashbih) stood at the heart of many theological debates, and was mostly discussed within the circles of traditionalist Islam. The way a scholar interpreted the anthropomorphic descriptions of God in the Qur'an or the Hadith (for instance, God's hand, God's laughter or God's sitting on the heavenly throne) often reflected his political and social stature, as well as his theological affinity.

Selling under the Swastika is the first in-depth study of commercial advertising in the Third Reich. While scholars have focused extensively on the political propaganda that infused daily life in Nazi Germany, they have paid little attention to the role played by commercial ads and sales culture in legitimizing and stabilizing the regime. Historian Pamela Swett explores the extent of the transformation of the German ads industry from the internationally infused republican era that preceded 1933 through the relative calm of the mid-1930s and into the war years. She argues that advertisements helped to normalize the concept of a "racial community," and that individual consumption played a larger role in the Nazi worldview than is often assumed. Furthermore, Selling under the Swastika demonstrates that commercial actors at all levels, from traveling sales representatives to company executives and ad designers, enjoyed relative independence as they sought to enhance their professional status and boost profits through the manipulation of National Socialist messages.
