Media-ethiek is een vorm van toegepaste ethiek waarbij de gebeurtenissen en probleemsituaties die zich voordoen in de media geanalyseerd en beoordeeld worden aan de hand van morele basisprincipes. In dit boek gaat het dus niet over meta-ethiek (waar komen ethische principes vandaan?) of descriptieve ethiek (waarom handelen mensen op moreel vlak op deze of gene manier?), maar over de manier waarop de media al dan niet ethisch correct handelen. Onder media verstaat de auteur alle middelen tot communicatie als dragers van informatie, zowel gedrukte media (kranten, tijdschriften, boeken, pamfletten, fotografie, enz.), gesproken media (radio, televisie, film, enz.) als nieuwe media (internet, interactieve telefonie, sociale netwerksites, enz.) en hybride media (combinaties van de gedrukte, gesproken en nieuwe media). Dit handboek is gericht op de houding van personen die dergelijke media gebruiken, niet op de media als zodanig.

In a time in which new technologies make it easy to gather and process data, the discussion on privacy tends to focus exclusively on the protecting of personal data. To Serge Gutwirth, privacy involves far more. He advances the intriguing thesis that privacy is in fact the safeguard of personal freedom the safeguard of the individual's freedom to decide who she or he is, what she or he does, and who knows about it. Any restriction on privacy thus means an infringement of personal freedom. And it's exactly this freedom that plays an essential role in every democracy.

This chapter lays out a set of procedures to investigate visual and verbal frames in news packages with an integrated approach. It provides an updated literature review on how audiovisual analyses can be conducted, reveals strengths and weaknesses of existing approaches, and adapts this advice to the necessities of visual news framing analyses. With a focus on issue framing, researchers will be guided through all the stages of the process from data collection to data analysis. Practical questions will be addressed, such as those concerning the unit of analysis, the preparation of the material, and strategies for frame identification and analysis. The chapter provides specific advice about how the interplay between verbal and visual frames in a news package can be measured in quantitative studies. All steps will be exemplified using a news package. The step-by-step delineation of a methodological approach to integrative framing analysis proposed here aims to spur more integrative studies and, through this, enhance our understanding of how journalists and their editors frame issues.
