Guy Mees's (1935-2003) photographs, videos, and above all his fragile works on paper are characterized by a formal rigor combined with sensitivity and delicacy. The uniqueness of his oeuvre lies precisely in its avoidance of conventional aesthetics and discursive classifications. A leading figure of the Belgian avant-garde, Mees left behind an outstanding body of work that transgresses geometric abstraction, Minimalism, Conceptualism, and applied art. 'The Weather is Quiet, Cool, and Soft' is published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (February 1-April 8, 2018), and at Mu.ZEE, Ostend (November 25, 2018-March 10, 2019). Borrowed from a note the artist jotted down on one of his works on paper, the title pays homage to the atmospheric impermanence of Mees's works, as well as his infra-ordinary, relativistic, and poetic approach. With emblematic works and unpublished archival materials from the artist's creative phases spanning the 1960s to 2000s, the publication emphasizes the idiosyncrasy and significance of Mees's practice and personality. These are complemented by two new essays by Lilou Vidal and François Piron; a translation of a text by Fernand Spillemaeckers from the 1970s; and an interview conducted with Mees's friend and accomplice Wim Meuwissen, his long-standing gallerist Micheline Szwajcer, and Dirk Snauwaert, who produced the first retrospective and a definitive monograph dedicated to Mees's work.

What precisely, W.J.T. Mitchell asks, are pictures (and theories of pictures) doing now, in the late twentieth century, when the power of the visual is said to be greater than ever before, and the "pictorial turn" supplants the "linguistic turn" in the study of culture? This book by one of America's leading theorists of visual representation offers a rich account of the interplay between the visible and the readable across culture, from literature to visual art to the mass media.

Bill Viola began producing video works in the early 1970s and since then has captivated audiences with his poignant and beautifully wrought interpretations of human experience. Viola has explored the possibilities of electronic, visual, and sound practices throughout his career and is today one of the most celebrated proponents of video art. This is the first monograph to chart Viola’s career in full, covering his education in New York, his earliest major films, his retrospective at the Whitney Museum in 1997, and his recent installations in Venice, New York, Tokyo, London, and Berlin. Renowned curator and specialist in video art John Hanhardt outlines the key visual, literary, and spiritual influences in Viola’s work and his changing approach to the medium of film as its technology advances. Woven into the discussion are illustrations of Viola’s most significant works, including Information (1973), The Passing (1991), The Greeting (1995), Going Forth by Day (2002), and Martyrs, the 2014 film commissioned for St Paul’s Cathedral in London, as well as reproductions of Viola’s sketches and notebooks that bring his working process to life. 400+ illustrations

Wilhelm Sasnal is one of the most celebrated artists to emerge from Eastern Europe in the twenty-first century. His practice embraces drawing, film, comics (his strips are regularly published in Machina and Przekroj, two Polish periodicals) and, above all, painting. Prolific, varied and deliberately unclassifiable, Sasnal channels the enigma of our contemporary image-based society. For him, 'art is largely a mystery [that] touches upon the invisible, the unnamed.' His painting draws together Pop, photorealism, abstraction, minimalism and photorealism to describe both banal and enchanted details of day-to-day reality, placing diverse subjects on a plane of equality. His key subjects, however, which he returns to again and again, are the possibilities and limits of representation. In his work, material and image swap places, crossing and recrossing the border between depiction and abstraction, often several times in a single canvas.. Sasnal was awarded the Vincent Van Gogh Prize in 2006, and his work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at major museums across Europe, including the Kunsthalle Zurich, the Frankfurter Kunstverein and the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst (MuHKA) in Antwerp. An exhibition of his work will open at London's Whitechapel Gallery in October 2011.
