European narratives of the Atlantic New World tell stories of people and things: strange flora, wondrous animals, sun-drenched populations for Europeans to mythologize or exploit. Yet, as Christopher Heuer explains, between 1500 and 1700, one region upended all of these conventions in travel writing, science, and, most unexpectedly, art: the Arctic. Icy, unpopulated, visually and temporally "abstract," the far North-a different kind of terra incognita for the Renaissance imagination-offered more than new stuff to be mapped, plundered, or even seen. Neither a continent, an ocean, nor a meteorological circumstance, the Arctic forced visitors from England, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy, to grapple with what we would now call a "non-site," spurring dozens of previously unknown works, objects, and texts-and this all in an intellectual and political milieu crackling with Reformation debates over art's very legitimacy. 0In Into the White, Heuer uses five case studies to probe how the early modern Arctic (as site, myth, and ecology) affected contemporary debates over perception and matter, representation, discovery, and the time of the earth-long before the nineteenth century Romanticized the polar landscape. In the far North, he argues, the Renaissance exotic became something far stranger than the marvelous or the curious, something darkly material and impossible to be mastered, something beyond the idea of image itself.

Aan een van de tientallen zijaltaren rinkelt voor de honderdste keer een bel. Orgelspel en klokkengelui overstemmen de kreet van een marktkramer bij het portaal. In het schemerduister, langs monumentale schilderijen en fluwelen gordijnen, turen heiligen naar de wirwar van kerkgangers. En wat te denken van de vrouwen die afgehakte vingers onder het altaar verstoppen? Laat je in dit boek meevoeren naar een van dé hotspots van de 16de eeuw: de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, vanaf 1559 de 'kathedraal' van Antwerpen. Dit majestueuze bouwwerk was het kloppend hart van de stad, waar diepgelovige parochianen het pad kruisten met hondenslagers, pelgrims en veehandelaars. De religieuze sereniteit was er soms ver te zoeken.

La dernière grande manifestation autour de "La nature morte de l'Antiquité au XXe siècle" fut organisée en 1952 à Paris par Charles Sterling. "Les Choses" rend hommage à ce grand historien de l'art, en actualisant le point de vue et en intégrant tout ce qui a renouvelé nos perspectives, tant en histoire de l'art ancien et contemporain, qu'en littérature, poésie, philosophie, archéologie, botanique ou écologie. Elargissant les frontières chronologiques et géographiques, l'ouvrage ouvre des fenêtres sur d'autres cultures qui ont représenté les choses en majesté. Il convoque des artistes contemporains qui s'inspirent de leurs prédécesseurs en modifiant notre regard sur le passé. Longtemps déconsidéré, le genre de la nature morte, assimilé à la trivialité de la vie quotidienne voire à la mécréance, doit être reconsidéré à la faveur de notre attachement grandissant aux choses ainsi qu'aux relations nouvelles qui s'établissent entre le vivant et le non vivant.
