Abstract

Abstract

From earliest times, angels have been seen as instruments of salvation and retribution, agents of revelation, and harbingers of hope. In effect, angels are situated at the intersections of diverse belief structures and philosophical systems. In this book, Meredith J. Gill examines the role of angels in medieval and Renaissance conceptions of heaven. She considers the character of Renaissance angelology as distinct from the medieval theological traditions that informed it and from which it emerged. Tracing the iconography of angels in text and in visual form, she also uncovers the philosophical underpinnings of medieval and Renaissance definitions of angels and their nature. From Dante through Pico della Mirandola, from the images of angels depicted by Fra Angelico to those painted by Raphael and his followers, angels, Gill argues, are the touchstones and markers of the era's intellectual self-understanding, and its classical revival, theological doctrines, and artistic imagination.

Abstract

Well known for his paintings and his book The Lives of the Artists, Giorgio Vasari also served as court architect to Grand Duke Cosimo I de Medici, contributing to Medicean legitimacy through such politically symbolic buildings as the Uffizi in Florence. Leon Satkowski presents the first book in any language to survey the architecture of Vasari. By focusing on the architect's service to his distinguished patrons and his collaboration with other architects, Satkowski reveals how Vasari combined imaginative design, political meaning, and a clear sense of history to create buildings so appealing to modern students of architecture. Incorporating Vasari's own writings and a close study of his buildings, this book places the architect squarely in the world of Palladio, Vignola, and Ammanati, and shows Vasari as their equal. In addition to the Uffizi, chapters are devoted to Vasari's Del Monte projects in Monte San Savino and Rome, the Corridoio and the renovation of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, religious architecture throughout Tuscany, and urban projects in Pisa and Arezzo that created the physical identity of Cosimo's new state. As a court architect, Vasari had few peers in the proper sense of the term.

Abstract

The growth of princely states in early Renaissance Italy brought a thorough renewal to the old seats of power. One of the most conspicuous outcomes of this process was the building or rebuilding of new court palaces, erected as prestigious residences in accord with the new ‘classical’ principles of Renaissance architecture. The novelties, however, went far beyond architectural forms: they involved the reorganisation of courtly interiors and their functions, new uses for the buildings, and the relationship between the palaces and their surroundings. The whole urban setting was affected by these processes, and therefore the social, residential and political customs of its inhabitants. This is the focus of A Renaissance Architecture of Power , which aims to analyse from a comparative perspective the evolution of Italian court palaces in the Renaissance in their entirety. Contributors are Silvia Beltramo, Flavia Cantatore, Bianca de Divitiis, Emanuela Ferretti, Marco Folin, Giulio Girondi, Andrea Longhi, Marco Rosario Nobile, Aurora Scotti, Elena Svalduz, and Stefano Zaggia.

Abstract

Between the fifteenth and the eighteenth century, princely courts dominated the Italian political scene. These courts were effervescent centers of cultural production. As such, they became a model for European monarchies who imported Italian courtly forma del vivere ("style of life") to legitimize their power and to define social status. This phenomenon included architecture and painting, theater and music, manners and aesthetics, and all the objects, behaviors and beliefs that contributed to homogenize European culture in the age of the Old Regime. It involved a hemorrhage of art and a continuous circulation of people, texts and symbols. The foundational material for this process was classicism and its purpose was political. This delineates a new geography and chronology of a truly European cultural history. It also provides the key traits for the European cultural identity.

Abstract

"The works for which Paolo Giovio is best known today are his two volumes of Elogia: one concerning notable literati (1546), the other surveying prominent military and political figures (1551). The first of these, entitled Portraits of Learned Men (Elogia veris clarorum virorum imaginibus), is here newly edited and translated. Taken as a whole, Portraits of Learned Men provides an insightful synopsis of the contours, mentality, and trajectory of humanistic culture in Italy and Europe from the fourteenth to the mid-sixteenth century. As he watched the foreign invasions of the Italian peninsula and the conquests that ensued, Giovio came to believe that the high culture of the Italian Renaissance-in which he had participated not only in Rome but in Florence, Milan, Naples, and elsewhere-was in rapid decline, a perspective he had voiced nearly two decades before in Notable Men and Women. We may view the Portraits as a mature and more systematic effort than that dialogue to capture and commemorate a bygone period of efflorescence. Unlike others' catalogues, however, Giovio's Portraits of Learned Men was but an offshoot of a far more ambitious project of commemoration. At least since 1521, he had been collecting likenesses of learned men, and the following year he began procuring portraits of outstanding rulers and men of arms. Tireless in supplicating potential patrons, he rapidly expanded his collection, and in 1537 he began construction on the southwest shore of Lake Como of a villa custom-made to display what he called his musaeum (literally, a "home of the Muses," but here carrying something resembling the modern sense of "museum"). Initially, he had planned just to identify the subjects in brief; but in perhaps his most creative move, he decided to enlarge the inscriptions to the point that they became biographical sketches, many of them several hundred words in length. Few of the biographical sketches in Portraits of Learned Men are eulogies; many verge on character assassination. Most lie in between, mixing praise and blame in a way that resembles the oratorical genre of epideictic favored by humanists in their sermons before the popes. Giovio sought to impart an appreciation for each man as a flesh-and-blood human being whose foibles were integral to making him who he was, and who, each in his own distinct way, contributed to making the Republic of Letters what it was. Viewed collectively, these capsule biographies (as the Latin elogia may best be rendered) can be seen to trace the arc of the development of learned culture in the Renaissance"--

Abstract

As new kinds of persons arose during the Renaissance and Reformation, writers of biography created new ways to depict them. Foremost among biographers were lay humanists who strategically blended personal memoirs and recently recaptured classical models to produce flexible new forms of biography. After an important new introduction, surveying the practice of biographical writing in Renasaince Italy and Reformation Germany, this collection begins with an analysis of Italian biographies, 1450 to 1550, from Valla through Machiavelli to Vasari. It proceeds to focus on one group in one nation: the German humanists' biographical collections and individual biographies of their humanist colleagues: pedagogues, scholars, poets and some reformers from 1480 to 1620. In addition to familiar subjects or writers like Erasmus, Melanchthon, and Luther, these essays demonstrate humanists' self-awareness of their own cultural importance across the sixteenth century and the enduring continuity of a German humanist culture that transcended religious differences. Some essays explore biographical techniques devised to depict the eccentric individuality of celebrity humanists like Beatus Rhenanus, Petrus Lotichius and Eobanus Hessus. Two essays also explore varied directions taken by pre-Reformation humanists as they re-fashioned the lives of saints, and by the earliest Lutheran reformers' new strategies along similar lines. The volume closes with a study of Erasmus's Ecclesiastes, a treatise on rhetoric, in a sense an 'ideal biography', along with a handlist of biographies discussed. This book will serve scholars of the Italian Renaissance, German humanism and the Lutheran reformation. Contents: Friendship and rhetoric: an introduction to biography in Renaissance Italy and Reformation Germany; Varieties of biography during the Italian Renaissance: individuality and beyond; Hagiography by German humanists, 1483–1516; Luther and his colleagues on the lives of the saints; Johannes Fichardus and the uses of humanistic biography; The six lives of Rudolph Agricola: forms and functions of humanist biography; Erasmus at Luther's funeral: Melanchthon's commemorations of Luther in 1546; Melanchthon and the legacy of Erasmus: Oratio de Puritate Doctrinae (1536) and the Oratio de Erasmio Roterodamo (1557); The technique of faint praise: Johann Sturm's Life of Beatus Rhenanus; The rhetoric of friendship: Joannes Hagius's Life of Petrus Lotchius Secundus; The harvest of German humanism: Melchior Adams's collective biographies as cultural history; Kennst Du das Land wo die Humanisten blühen?
