Abstract

This volume is the final output of a project started in 2013 on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the Scandinavian Section of the University of Milan. A group of scholars working on different European and non-European cultural and literary traditions come together here to discuss the relationships between their areas of study and the Nordic countries. The range of the contributions expands over time and space, from the Middle Ages to the present day, from Poland in the east to the United States in the west, across various European countries. Through various kinds of expertise and different perspectives, this intercultural discourse deals with diverse themes, including the perception of Nordic culture(s) by foreign writers as well as the image of other cultures in Scandinavian works. In particular, the literary and cultural interchange of models and ideas between the North and other areas is investigated in a number of essays devoted to numerous authors, including, among others, Klaus Böldl, Carmen de Burgos, Carlo Emilio Gadda, Gerhart Hauptmann, Henrik Ibsen, Stieg Larsson, Carl von Linné, Rainer Maria Rilke, J.D. Salinger, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Mme de Staël, August Strindberg, and Tomas Tranströmer.

Abstract

Hauptbeschreibung The current relationship between the Nordic countries and the European Union appears complex and confusing. Although Denmark, in 1973, and Sweden and Finland, in 1995, joined the European Union, the entry of Norway into the Union was rejected in the plebiscites of 1972 and 1994. Furthermore, Nordic EU members enjoy permanent exceptions to their integration into the EU: Denmark and Sweden, like the U.K., have declined to become part of the monetary union. Finland is essentially the only Nordic country that entered the EU without substantial exceptions. A membership

Abstract

"This book explores how entrepreneurship can be taught through case studies, arguing that entrepreneurship education needs specific cases and case methods to teach students entrepreneurial skills and mindsets. Providing unique perspectives and examples on how case teaching can be applied in entrepreneurship education, the book draws together a wide range of real-life case studies. Informing and inspiring entrepreneurship educators, Part I employs theoretical perspectives and practical procedures related to case teaching in entrepreneurship education. Novel and innovative case methods for entrepreneurship education are explored as well as the theoretical foundations of case-based entrepreneurship education. Part II offers 15 Nordic case studies divided into three main groups relating to becoming an entrepreneur, early-phase venture creation, and acting entrepreneurially in established organisations. Supplemented by online teaching notes, this thought-provoking book will be a valuable resource for entrepreneurship educators at higher education institutions. Questions and activities included in the case studies will also be useful for students with an interest in entrepreneurship"--

Abstract

Compared to other medieval philologies, the particular nature of the literature of the North, and in particular of Iceland, has always meant that the study of Old Norse languages must be interdisciplinary and rely on methodical variety. This volume, published on the occasion of the 80th birthday of the Munich old Norse scholar, Kurt Schier, contains some three dozen studies on the mythology, history of religion, literature and poetry of the North, as well as runic and onomastic studies, and so reflects the broad thematic spectrum of modern old Nordic studies.

Abstract

The turbulence of the Protestant Reformation marks a turning point in European history, but the Scandinavian contribution to this revolution is not well known outside the Northern world. Reforming the North focuses on twenty-five years (1520-45 AD) of this history, during which Scandinavians terminated the medieval Union of Kalmar, toppled the Catholic Church, ended the commercial dominance of the German Hanse, and laid the foundations for centralized states on the ruins of old institutions and organizations. This book traces the chaotic and often violent transfer of resources and authority from the decentralized structures of medieval societies to the early modern states and their territorial churches. Religious reform is regarded as an essential element in the process - in the context of social unrest, political conflict, and long-term changes in finance, trade, and warfare. Reforming the North offers a broad perspective on this turbulent period and on the implications of the Protestant Reformation for Northern history.
