Abstract

The volume Un incontro lusofono plurale di lingue, letterature, storie, culture (A plural Lusophone encounter of languages, literatures, stories, cultures) aims at highlighting one of the specificities of the Lusophone culture: the linguistic-literary pluralism that continues to distinguish Portuguese culture, from Brazil, to Africa and Asia, since the time of maritime discoveries. The collected essays mark, in this regard, a twofold path: they are intercultural, since they alternate the literary and linguistic aspects from the humanistic to the contemporary era, but they also are intergeneris as they alternate not only historiography and treatises with poetry and narrative - with inter-artistic incursions across literature, painting and photography - but also linguistic aspects, namely grammatical, and examples of rewritings and translational questions, in a sort of further Lusophone dialogue between genres and topoi.

Abstract

Along with The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas and Dom Casmurro, Quincas Borba is one of Machado de Assis' major works and indeed one of the major works of nineteenth century fiction. With his uncannily postmodern sensibility, his delicious wit, and his keen insight into the political and social complexities of the Brazilian Empire, Machado opens a fascinating world to English speaking readers. When the mad philosopher Quincas Borba dies, he leaves to his friend Rubiao the entirety of his wealth and property, with a single stipulation: Rubiao must take care of Quincas Borba's dog, who is also

Abstract

Anti-Empire explores how different writers across Lusophone spaces have engaged with imperial and colonial power at its various levels of domination, while imagining alternatives to dominant discourses pertaining to race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexuality, and class. Guided by a theoretically eclectic approach ranging from Psychoanalysis, Deconstruction, Postcolonial Theory, Queer Theory, and Critical Race Studies, Empire is explored as a spectrum of contemporary global power inaugurated by European expansion and propagated in the postcolonial present through economic, cultural, and political forces. Through the texts analysed, Anti-Empire offers in-depth interrogations of contemporary power in terms of racial politics, gender performance, socio-economic divisions, political structures, and the intersections of these facets of domination and hegemony. By way of grappling with Empire's discursive field and charting new modes of producing meaning in opposition to that of Empire, the texts read from Brazil, Cabo Verde, East Timor, Portugal, and São Tomé and Príncipe open new inquiries for Postcolonial and Decolonial Studies while contributing theoretical debates to the study of Lusophone cultures.

Abstract

La spugna è la mia anima. Omaggio a Piero Ceccucci (“The sponge is my soul. Tribute do Pietro Ceccucci”) is a work born from the sincere affection and esteem of many Italian and foreign colleagues who enthusiastically welcomed the idea of paying homage to their friend and colleague Piero Ceccucci and to his long career as a university professor of Portuguese and Brazilian language and literature at various Italian universities, such as Perugia, Milan, University “Bocconi” of Milan, Genoa and Florence. This volume aims to be a fair recognition of the commitment and dedication that Prof. Piero Ceccucci has addressed to the teaching of Portuguese language and literature in Italy, but also to remind him the gratitude of University of Florence, to which, we are sure, he will always be tied.

Abstract

Fragments of the contemporary: readings brings together articles by professors from the Graduate Program in Letters at UNESP, campus of São José do Rio Preto, the result of their recent research on contemporary literature. The book, composed of seven studies, analyzes texts and national and international authors, in prose and poetry. Susanna Busato studies the subject that adheres to the urban space, based on the poetry of Frederico Barbosa, Heitor Ferraz and Fábio Weintraub. Sérgio Vicente Motta analyzes Chico Buarque's novel, Leite Derramado. Arnaldo Franco Junior explores the relationships between textual production, intertextuality in works by Dalton Trevisan and Valêncio Xavier. Contemporary Portuguese literature is contemplated in the study by Sônia H. Piteri on the work of Maria Gabriela Llansol and Maria H. Martins Dias, which addresses the fictional discourse of António Lobo Antunes in O inquisitors manual. Giséle Manganelli Fernandes investigates how postmodern fiction reevaluates the past in Don DeLillo's Falling Man. Diva Cardoso de Camargo discusses the style in self-translation, through the works Viva o Povo Brasileiro, by João Ubaldo Ribeiro, and An invincible memory, by João Ubaldo Ribeiro.

Abstract

This book opens up to a diversity of meanings that the concept of space holds in contemporary literary objects and settings. The text itself as a spatializing space, in its textuality as a body or in the visuality of writing, configures a space of language. The cultural and historical context involves references and data located at certain moments that articulate a space of relationships with the literary text. The institutionalization space, with the representations of power, the social space, the space as landscape, in natural, regional, physical and psychological configurations, and the myth space with its symbolic images and meanings, are other forms of mobilization of the concept. The pictorial space, whether as a component element of painting or as the language itself in the composition of writing, which uses plastic techniques, is also contemplated, just as this type of dialogue houses other media and languages, such as cinema, advertising, photography, in the relations between the arts. There is also the possibility of reviewing the literary object, in terms of spatiality, under this multiple perspective of the contemporary gaze. That is, in place of that restricted sense of structural category, the concept incorporates a broad and metaphorical view, within which the text itself brings out a conception and function of spatiality through its construction strategies. Faced with so many possibilities for reading the concept, this book brings together texts that address aspects of spatial symbolization in literary works that imply a contemporary look at these figurations.

Abstract

What may perhaps be more intriguing to the reader who for the first time comes across the title Travessias pela Portuguesa Literatura: critical studies from Saramago to Vieira is the apparent anomaly in the arrangement of the names that appear in subtitles: from Saramago to Vieira. Wouldn't it make more logic from Vieira to Saramago? However, when we go through the set of eight articles that make up this volume, we understand that they are not arranged in chronological order.
