Revolutions in the Arab world have not only shaken or brought down regimes deemed irremovable. Their shock waves have also upset the relations of Arab countries with other states in the world. It is this fundamental and yet little explored question that this book addresses on the repercussions of the Arab revolutions on a regional and international scale, through the examples of Turkey, Iran, Russia, Israel and from China. Each of the chapters of the first part thus offers an off-centre look at the revolutionary processes still at work. The second part of the book allows a completely different shift. By focusing on the media and on the artistic scene, it is a profound reformulation of political discourses and practices that the contributors to this work bring to light. And this, for questions as central as the practices of Islam, the capacities of engagement, and conversely the perpetuation of the logics of obedience. Finally, this book explores, in its last section, the social and spatial transformations on which the revolutions have shed new light: how the liberalization policy led by the al-Assad regime has contributed to the outbreak of violence in Syria. ; how the migrations of workers in the Maghreb, the Middle East and the Gulf have influenced the transformation of Arab regimes; how, lastly, the revolutions changed the relationship of the Egyptians to the public space and of the Libyans to their territory.

This book seeks to advance knowledge of human settlement and adaptation in the world's largest desert, the sahara. Previous studies focussed on the prehistoric phases but this study takes a wider historical and geographical perspective. It sets out to combine the results of several field campaigns, their histories and methodologies. We look at fieldwork, fortifications, funerary structures, irrigation, rock art and human occupation. The final summary looks at the current state of research and offers a platform for future investigations.

Since 2011 the Libyan crisis has moved from being a domestic dispute to assuming increasing importance at the international level. Today it represents a crucial issue affecting global security. The intervention of external actors in the Libyan crisis was mainly driven by a desire to direct the transition towards outcomes that would best meet their own political and economic interests. Accordingly, each external player tried to support one specific faction, favoring either the Parliament in Tobruk, upheld by Khalifa Haftar, or the Presidential Council headed by Fayez al-Serraj in Tripoli, the latter being legitimized by the UN as well as by local militias in both Misrata and Tripoli. This report analyzes the troublesome re-building of Libya with a focus on the specific role played by international actors (neighboring and Gulf countries, European nations, Russia and the US) which make it more of an international rather than a domestic issue.

This groundbreaking new volume provides the first comprehensive review of the Libyan conflict of 2011. The book expands on and complements the report of the Libya Commission of Inquiry to the United Nations Human Rights Council, and provides the reader with the information essential to understanding the Libyan conflict, its causes and ramifications, and the difficulties the country faces as it rebuilds in the wake of 40 years of repression and the effects of a brutal civil war. The book provides a historical overview of the country and the ruinous policies of the Qadhafi regime, a chronological review of the evolution of the conflict, a description of the belligerents and their organizational makeup, an account of the NATO intervention and its legality, a basic legal characterization of conduct of the belligerents and the various accountability mechanisms pursued thus far, and an appraisal of the post-conflict period, as well as a detailed factual assessment and legal characterization of ten different theaters of conflict, including Benghazi, Tripoli, Misrata, Sirte and the Nafusa Mountains.

The bloody Libyan Revolution of 2011 that overthrew Muammar Gaddafi and the resurgence of violence between factions since 2014 have led to a terrible displacement crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people uprooted within the country, and hundreds of thousands more forced to seek shelter in neighboring countries, particularly Tunisia. Those who have been uprooted range from beneficiaries of the Gaddafi regime, to persecuted ethnic minorities, to those simply caught in the crossfire. Many of these exiles live in fear of being forcibly returned to Libya where, in the absence of security, rule of law, and a functional transitional justice process, they may face incarceration, torture, and death. The continued displacement of Libyans has significant political, socio-economic, humanitarian, and human rights implications. Drawing on in-depth interviews with policymakers, practitioners, and displaced persons in Libya and Tunisia, this study analyzes the complex dimensions and implications of the Libyan displacement crisis. While resolution of this crisis hinges on a negotiated end to the Libyan civil war, this study seeks to help lay the groundwork for this process by identifying constructive approaches to improve assistance strategies, and, eventually to support durable solutions for displaced Libyans.
