Scorsese and Religion concerns the religious vision of the great American filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Not only will this volume explore the foundation of Scorsese’s interest in religion—namely, his relation to the Catholic Church—but it will also highlight the religious breadth of Scorsese’s corpus. Ultimately, this book demonstrates that Scorsese’s cinematic “re-presentation” of reality brings together various religious influences (Catholicism, existentialism, Buddhism, etc.) and topics such as violence, morality, nihilism, and so on. The overarching claim is that Scorsese, who indeed once claimed that his “whole life” had been “movies and religion,” cannot be properly understood without reflecting on the ways in which his religious interests are expressed in and through his art.

Si j'écris ces notes à la première personne du singulier, je sais qu'elles sont écrites à la première personne du pluriel. Mon frère. Je ne pourrais pas faire ce film sans lui et il ne pourrait pas le faire sans moi. Ses questions sont les miennes. Souvent ce sont elles qui me poussent à écrire ces notes comme le transcripteur d'une réflexion, d'une pensée partagée. C'est la même chose pour le scénario. Je tiens la plume mais elle écrit à deux mains. Que nos images ne soient pas un destin. Qu'elles arrachent les volets de la chambre mortuaire où nous étouffons. Qu'elles ne tombent pas dans la caricature qui enferme les personnages. Habiter un petit pays comme le nôtre. Ne pas fréquenter le milieu du cinéma. L'isolement nécessaire. [...]Revenir aux corps, aux accessoires, aux lieux, aux murs, aux portes, au fleuve. Partir du concret, pas des idées, ou alors attendre que l'idée soit oubliée et qu'éventuellement elle revienne comme quelque chose de concret qui en est la trace. Les moments essentiels pour l'écriture de nos scénarios sont ceux passés à oublier les idées.

Derek Jarman was a very English rebel, a maverick and radical artist whose unique and distinctive voice was honed protesting against the strictures of life in post-war Britain.
