This volume, the first of its kind, launches a conversation amongst humanities scholars doing fieldwork on the global south. It both offers indispensable tools and demonstrates the value of such work inside and outside of the academy. The contributors reflect upon their experiences of fieldwork, the methods they improvised, their dilemmas and insights, and the ways in which fieldwork shifted their frames of analysis. Sinds het einde van de Koude Oorlog zijn de politieke en economische machtsverhoudingen op wereldvlak sterk geëvolueerd. Naast de Verenigde Staten en West-Europa eist China een steeds belangrijkere plaats op. Andere ontwikkelingslanden zoals Brazilië en India groeien uit tot economische grootmachten. De internationale handel, inclusief die van de ontwikkelingslanden, is sterk gestegen. Ook de stromen van buitenlandse directe investeringen en van private transfers van migranten naar de ontwikkelingslanden zijn fors toegenomen. De snelle groei van grote landen heeft de wereldwijde armoede doen dalen. Maar binnen die landen blijft een substantieel deel van de bevolking onder de grens van extreme armoede. Tegen die achtergrond is ook de ontwikkelingssamenwerking geëvolueerd. Ze gaat meer dan vroeger naar de armste landen en naar armoedebestrijding. In plaats van specifieke projecten te financieren, geven de officiële donoren in toenemende mate steun aan het globale beleid dat ontvangende landen voeren. Multilaterale donoren zoals de Verenigde Naties, de Wereldbank en de Europese Unie hebben eveneens hun samenwerkingsbeleid aangepast. Het boek bevat bijdragen van diverse auteurs over de veranderende internationale politieke en economische samenhang, nieuwe hulpbenaderingen, de multilaterale actoren, andere internationale financiële stromen dan ontwikkelingshulp en een gevalstudie van Zuid-Afrika.
