Contributions and case studies from Germany and other European countries, as well as from Asia, Australia and the US, demonstrate different aspects of reducing the "ecological footprint" in libraries. As well as looking at everyday procedures, the social role and responsibility of libraries as leaders in environmental sustainability are considered as are achieving a positive image for the library and the role of sustainability in marketing. The book also includes examples of sustainability in libraries through short papers presenting interesting cases. Contributions by experts in their field are written in German or in English and all have German and English abstracts. The publication will be of interest to librarians from public, business, special and university libraries, teachers and students of library and information science as well as anyone interested in ecological solutions such as architects, library users, library governing bodies, certification agencies and professional library associations. Informatie- en communicatietechnologie (ICT) speelt een belangrijke rol in onze samenleving. De voordelen van ICT zijn talrijk, maar het is duidelijk dat er ook schaduwkanten zijn die uitnodigen tot maatschappelijke discussie, persoonlijke reflectie en waakzaamheid. Dit boek behandelt de belangrijkste kwesties betreffende ICT en privacy, ICT en auteursrecht, computermisdaad, informatie op het internet, de invloed van ICT op werk, school en samenleving, en de ontwikkeling van informatiesystemen. De lezer wordt voortdurend uitgenodigd om zelf mee na te denken, door verwijzingen naar de actualiteit, cases, denkvragen en praktijkgerichte onderzoeksopdrachten bij elk hoofdstuk. Waar nodig wordt stilgestaan bij wetgeving en reglementering. Technische onderwerpen worden nader toegelicht in aparte kaderstukken en bij elk hoofdstuk is ook een filosofische beschouwing gevoegd. Op systematische wijze worden in opeenvolgende hoofdstukken de volgende onderwerpen belicht: - ICT en privacy; - ICT en auteursrecht; - computermisdaad; - het internet als informatiebron; - diverse andere aspecten verbonden met ICT op het werk; - in de samenleving en het onderwijs; - en de ontwikkeling van informatiesystemen. Bij elk hoofdstuk zijn denkvragen en onderzoeksopdrachten opgenomen die uitnodigen tot persoonlijke reflectie en actie. U kan zelf kiezen welke hij behandelt, in welke volgorde en met welke diepgang. "Shoshana Zuboff, named "the true prophet of the information age" by the Financial Times, has always been ahead of her time. "In the eyes of many, one of the most challenging problems of the information society is that we are faced with an ever expanding mass of information. Selection of the relevant bits of information seems to become more important than the retrieval of data as such: the information is all out there, but what it means and how we should act on it may be one of the big questions of the 21st century. If an information society is a society with an exponential proliferation of data, a knowledge society must be the one that has learned how to cope with this. Profiling technologies seem to be one of the most promising technological means to create order in the chaos of proliferating data. In this volume a multifocal view will be developed to focus upon what profiling is, where it is applied and what may be the impact on democracy and rule of law.
