This book is an edition and translation of one of the most important and celebrated sources of Old Norse-Icelandic mythology and heroic legend, namely the medieval poems now known collectively as the Poetic Edda or Elder Edda. Included are thirty-six texts, which are mostly preserved in medieval manuscripts, especially the thirteenth-century Icelandic codex traditionally known as the Codex Regius of the Poetic Edda. The poems cover diverse subjects, including the creation, destruction and rebirth of the world, the dealings of gods such as Óðinn, Þórr and Loki with giants and each other, and the more intimate, personal tragedies of the hero Sigurðr, his wife Guðrún and the valkyrie Brynhildr.

This book explores the ways in which contemporary authors respond to and rework key aspects of Old Norse history and viking culture for young twenty-first-century audiences. Why are contemporary authors and audiences so manifestly attracted to the viking past? In what ways do writers respond to Norse sources? How do the narratives they tell reflect our beliefs about and desires for the past, our constructions of childhood and adolescence, our anxieties around.

La religion des Vikings fascine depuis longtemps. Toutefois, si l'on connaît les aventures de Thor ou d'Odin, les conditions dans lesquelles leurs mythes furent transmis n'ont pas fait l'objet d'un même type d'attention. Or, un constat s'impose : dans leur très grande majorité, les sources qui nous renseignent sur cette religion sont le fait d'auteurs chrétiens, qui les mirent par écrit des siècles après la conversion dans des contextes sociopolitiques précis. C'est dire que ces textes - mythes, sagas, poèmes, lois - posent problème pour la reconstruction de l'histoire de la religion de la Scandinavie préchrétienne. Adoptant un point de vue critique, ce volume problématise l'ancrage chrétien, et donc tardif, des sources et propose une analyse articulant les représentations religieuses "païennes" d'avant la conversion au contexte de leur production. Il s'agit ainsi de se demander comment et pourquoi des Islandais médiévaux mobilisèrent les esprits de la terre, le sacrifice humain, la magie, le destin, ainsi que Thor ou sa mère la Terre.Fondé sur une étude détaillée de sources provenant de l'Islande des XIIe et XIIIe siècles, attentive aux désaccords entre celles-ci, ce volume propose également une réflexion sur les méthodes, les objets et les visées d'une histoire des religions critique. Prenant le contrepied de travaux synthétiques sur la religion préchrétienne, il accorde une place centrale aux conflits qui traversent les sociétés Scandinaves et montre comment les discours religieux, "païens" aussi bien que chrétiens, sont instrumentalisés pour maintenir ou, au contraire, bouleverser les configurations sociopolitiques, à une époque où la royauté norvégienne opère violemment sa centralisation et manifeste ses visées impérialistes sur une Islande secouée elle aussi par les ambitions de ses chefs.

The linguist and philologist Jacob Grimm (1785-1863) is best remembered as co-editor, with his brother Wilhelm, of Grimm's Fairy Tales, though their great Deutsches Wörterbuch remains an influential reference work. Grimm's exhaustive study in comparative mythology and religion, Deutsche Mythologie, was first published in German in 1835: this English translation, published between 1880 and 1888, is of the posthumous fourth German edition of 1875. Drawing on his broad knowledge of language and world mythology, Grimm outlines a wide variety of themes in Germanic folklore (such as time, creation, destiny and the soul), comparing them to classical and oriental tales as well as charting the influence of Christianity on legends and on Pagan religion. Volume 2 focuses on legendary creatures such as giants, elves, dwarves and sprites.
