Abstract

This text allows social scientists who are not specialists in quantitative techniques to arrive at clear verbal explanations of their numerical results. It discusses specialized subjects such as analysis of residuals, interaction effects, dummy variables, specification error, multicollinearity, and standardized coefficients.

Abstract

Using a friendly, non-technical approach, the second edition of 'Regression Basics' introduces readers to the fundamentals of regression. Accessible to anyone with an introductory statistics background, this book builds from a simple two-variable model to a model of greater complexity. Author Leo H. Kahane weaves four engaging examples throughout the text to illustrate not only the techniques of regression but also how this empirical tool can be applied in creative ways to consider a broad array of topics.

Abstract

"This book is an introduction to regression analysis focusing on the practicalities of doing regression analysis on real life data. Contrary to other textbooks on regression, this book is based on the idea that you do not necessarily need to know much about statistics and mathematics to get a firm grip on regression and perform it to perfection. This non-technical point of departure is complimented by practical examples of real-life data analysis using statistics software such as Stata, R and SPSS. The first two parts of the book cover the basics, such as simple linear regression, multiple linear regression, how to interpret the output from statistics programs, significance testing and the key regression assumptions. The third part of the book deals with how to practically handle violations of the classical linear regression assumptions, regression modelling for categorical y-variables and instrumental variable (IV) regression. The fourth part of the book puts the various purposes of, or motivations for, regression into the wider context of writing a scholarly report and points to some extensions to related statistical techniques. This book is written primarily for those who need to do regression analysis in practice, and not only to understand how this method works in theory. The book's accessible approach is recommended for students from across the social sciences"--

Abstract

Achen builds a working philosophy of regression analysis that goes beyond the abstract, unrealistic treatment given in previous texts. He sets out the procedures researchers employ, places them in the framework of statistical theory, and shows how good research takes account of both statistical theory and the demands of the real world.

Abstract

"This book provides a concise treatment of statistical regression modelling together with three detailed case studies for undergraduate students and professional master students with limited background in calculus. All sections have been retained from the second edition, with the author clarifying sections and reworking the more challenging topics. The author has added more end-of-chapter exercises and has added coverage of several new topics. All methods are clearly illustrated using datasets that are available in a variety of formats on the book's supplemental website. Detailed instructions for applying the methods are provided for many software packages, including SPSS, Minitab, DataDesk, SAS, JMP, R, Eviews, Stata, Statistica, and Excel. The book introduces modeling extensions that illustrate more advanced regression techniques, including logistic regression, Poisson regression, discrete choice models, multilevel models, Bayesian modeling, and time series and forecasting. The writing is clear and careful, avoiding overly technical language. There is extensive cross-referencing, an exhaustive index, an appendix with all notation and formulas collected together, a mathematics refresher, a list of references, and a glossary of terms. Illustrations, graphs, and computer software output appears throughout. Detailed exercises collected together at the end of each chapter are carefully chosen to illustrate concepts and aid understanding. Brief solutions for half of the exercises are provided in an appendix while complete solutions to all the exercises are available in an Instructor's Manual. Supplemental exercises are available on the book's website. In addition, Instructor and student resources are available on the book's website, including datasets, software information, presentation slides, supplemental exercises, and videos covering particular topics and software demonstrations"--

Abstract

Trying to determine when to use a logistic regression and how to interpret the coefficients? Frustrated by the technical writing in other books on the topic? Pampel's book offers readers the first 'nuts and bolts' approach to doing logistic regression through the use of careful explanations and worked out examples.

Abstract

This text begins by showing how logistic regression combines aspects of multiple linear regression and loglinear analysis to overcome problems both techniques have with the analysis of dichotomous dependent variables with continuous predictors. It then examines what can go wrong with the model and how to detect and correct it.

Abstract

The focus in this second edition is on logistic regression models for individual level (but aggregate or grouped) data. Multiple cases for each possible combination of values of the predictors are considered in detail.
