As the United States moved from Victorian values to those of modern consumerism, the religious component of Freemasonry was increasingly displaced by a secular ideology of service (like that of business and professional clubs), and the Freemasons' psychology of asylum from the competitive world gave way to the aim of good fellowship" within it. This study not only illuminates this process but clarifies the neglected topic of fraternal orders and enriches our understanding of key facets of American cultural change.Originally published in 1984.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. After completing his education, Karl Philipp Moritz (1756-1793) was employed as a teacher and professor throughout his life. Volume 6 of his Collected Works, Writings on Pedagogy and Freemasonry includes all of his writings that are directly related to pedagogical practice. Also included are texts with a subtler but clear pedagogical intent, such as Moritz's only sermon that has been preserved in its entirety, as well as the collection Die große Loge ("The Great Lodge")(1793), which contains essays on moral philosophy, aesthetics, and freemasonry, and at the same time serves as an excellent in

They built some of the first communal structures on the empire's frontiers. The empire's most powerful proconsuls sought entrance into their lodges. Their public rituals drew dense crowds from Montreal to Madras. The Ancient Free and Accepted Masons were quintessential builders of empire, argues Jessica Harland-Jacobs. In this first study of the relationship between Freemasonry and British imperialism, Harland-Jacobs takes readers on a journey across two centuries and five continents, demonstrating that from the moment it left Britain's shores, Freemasonry proved central to the building and co

The classical concept of organizations as comprising solitary 'walled-in' actors with clear operational boundaries is increasingly being challenged. On the one hand, established organizational forms have been supplemented by a whole variety of new ones that only partially exhibit their properties and that frequently embed single organizations in national or transnational networks; furthermore, it is often not clear who the members of an organization are and what membership actually means, as in the case of new companies such as Uber or AirBnB, and even traditional organizations, such as universities, are undergoing drastic changes. On the other hand, organizations face increasing demands for transparency, meaning they have to disclose more and more information, which is supposed to engender less corruption, more efficiency, and more legitimacy. This volume investigates the impact of these changes on organizations and offers conceptual as well as empirical insights. Divided into four parts this volume examines concepts of organizational boundaries, boundaries and organizational dynamics, meta organization and organizational networks, and boundaries and organizational fields.
