The purpose of the research in this volume is to design a machine-tractable dictionary from the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE). A machine-tractable dictionary is intended to be a basic facility for a whole spectrum of natural language processing tasks.

This book contains a collection of revised refereed papers selected from the presentations at the 5th East-West Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, EWHCI '95, held in Moscow, Russia, in July 1995. The main goal of the EWHCI conference series is to serve as a forum for professional and personal contact between researchers in the former Soviet Union and researchers from the rest of the world. The 13 papers presented in the volume were selected from 70 submissions; in addition there is a summary of a tutorial on activity theory by Kaptelinin, Kuutti, and Bannon.
