For the Muslim faithful, the familiar sound of the Qur'anic recitation is the predominant and most immediate means of contact with the Word of God. Heard day and night, on the street, in taxis, in shops, in mosques, and in homes, the sound of recitation is far more than the pervasive background music of daily life in the Arab world. It is the core of religious devotion, the sanctioning spirit of much cultural and social life, and a valued art form in its own right. Participation in recitation, as reciter or listener, is itself an act of worship, for the sound is basic to a Muslim's sense of religion and invokes a set of meanings transcending the particular occasion. For the most part, Westerners have approached the Qur'an much as scriptural scholars have studied the Bible, as a collection of written texts. This work aims at redirecting that focus toward a deeper understanding of the Qur'an as a fundamentally oral phenomenon.

This work contains indexes of the proper names and the subjects of the Great Commentary of Faẖr al-Dîn al-Râzî, which comprises 32 volumes and forms an immense encyclopedia of the Middle Ages, invaluable for the knowledge of Classical Islam. The work is based on the Beirut edition (1981), but it contains a synopsis which allows for the use of the editions of Cairo (1933) and Teheran (n.d.). In the introduction, one finds a synthesis of the text's important elements, the statement of exegetical principles of the Great Commentary , and information relating to its chronology and authorship.

This book contains the updated papers of an international symposium "The Qur'an as Text" which was held at the University of Bonn in November 1993. This collection intends to break away from the 19th-century paradigm of "influences", which seems largely exhausted but still dominates Qur'anic studies. Instead, this collection focuses on the literary, the intertextual and the receptional aspects of the Qur'anic text. A new approach to the holy book of Islam in the light of modern hermeneutics which is based on modern methods of literary history, text-linguistics, and aesthetics can open the door for a new and more adequate understanding of the Qur'an, its role for Islamic religion, and its unique place in the history of world religions today.
