From emails relating to adoption over the Internet to discussions in the airline cockpit, the spoken or written texts we produce can have significant social consequences. The area of Mediated Discourse Analysis considers texts in their social and cultural contexts to explore the actions individuals take with texts - and the consequences of those actions. Discourse in Action: brings together leading scholars from around the world in the area of Mediated Discourse Analysis reveals ways in which its theory and methodology can be used in research into contemporary social situations explores real situations and draws on real data in each chapter shows how analysis of texts in their social contexts broadens our understanding of the real world. Taken together, the chapters provide a comprehensive overview to the field and present a range of current studies that address some of the most important questions facing students and researchers in linguistics, education, communication studies and other fields.

À partir de vingt-six revues publiées au Québec et de thèses présentées à l'Université Laval depuis 1960, les auteurs dressent un bilan critique des études psychologiques et socio-culturelles de l'alcoolisme. L'inventaire a été dressé en regroupant les travaux autour de quatre types d'études ; épidémiologiques, étiologiques, cliniques et préventives. Chaque type d'étude comporte une revue commentée des travaux expérimentaux et théoriques ainsi qu'une analyse des principales lacunes à combler. En conclusion, les auteurs énoncent les principes directeurs d'une intervention renouvelée dans le domaine de l'alcoolisme. Having reviewed twenty-six journals published in Quebec, the authors establish a critical inventory of psychological and socio-cultural studies of alcoholism published since 1960. The review is built around four types of studies, namely, epidemiological, etiological, clinical and preventive. For each type of study there are extensive comments on empirical and theoretical studies as well as an identification of the main gaps to be filled. In conclusion, the authors formulate the main guiding principles for a renewed public and private action in the field of alcoholism.
