Catalan culture has a long history beginning with Guifre the Hairy, who founded the longest line of descent in medieval Europe, to the post-Franco period when Catalan autonomy was restored in 1975 under a new democratic constitution. The Catalan language, the core of Catalan culture, was banned three times in history: in 1714 by Philip the Fifth of Spain, by Primo de Rivera in the 1920's, and by Franco in 1939 until his death. In spite of these setbacks, Catalan Culture has persisted through a strong commitment to nonviolent actions that have kept the culture alive. This book documents this resistance in two nation-states of France and Spain.
