"Riga war eines der großen Ghettos, in das ab 1941 Juden aus ganz Zentraleuropa deportiert wurden. Durch den systematischen Ausbau als Deportationsziel gewinnt Riga eine große Bedeutung für die Geschichte der nationalsozialistischen Vernichtungspolitik weit über den regionalen Rahmen hinaus und lässt die gesamteuropäische Dimension des Holocaust deutlich werden.Die Autoren widmen sich der Gesamtgeschichte des Rigaer Ghettos und des Schicksals seiner Insassen. Darüber hinaus jedoch schildern sie - auf Grundlage sämtlicher erreichbarer Quellen - gleichermaßen die großen Linien der Vernichtungspolitik wie ihre mörderische lokale Ausprägung. Dies schließt die Darstellung der Geschehnisse nach der Evakuierung Rigas vor der anrückenden Roten Armee mit ein: Der Abtransport der Häftlinge in das K.L. Stutthof, das dortige Massensterben und auch die letzten Todesmärsche. Der Band schließt mit einem Kapitel zum Leben der Täter und Opfer in der Nachkriegszeit sowie zur strafrechtlichen Verfolgung der begangenen Gewaltverbrechen."

The authors—recognized historians, ethnologists, folklorists coming from four continents—present the latest research findings on the relationship, coexistence and conflicts of popular belief systems, Judeo-Christian mythology and demonology in medieval and modern Europe.
