Une métaphore plus fameuse encore que celle du "livre de la vie" s'est imposée récemment : le "gène égoïste ", selon laquelle nous serions les esclaves de nos gènes, lesquels nous utiliseraient à seule fin de se reproduire. À ces idées fausses, et étroitement réductionnistes, Denis Noble oppose une autre métaphore, celle de la "musique de la vie". Les gènes sont déterminés par l'organisme et son environnement autant qu'ils le déterminent.
