À la lumière des travaux de recherche des 30 dernières années, ce Cahier consacré à Franz Kafka cherche à restituer l’histoire de l’écrivain et de l’homme et à donner un aperçu de la richesse et de la diversité de l’œuvre, ainsi que de la variété des interprétations qu’elle continue de susciter même après la fin de ce XXe siècle dont Kafka représente la plus parfaite incarnation littéraire. Ce Cahier reconstitue la trajectoire de Kafka écrivain, à travers un choix de textes autobiographiques pris dans les Journaux, dans les Cahiers in-octavo ou dans les lettres. Ainsi, la partie conservée de la correspondance avec Felice Bauer (1912-1917) et Milena Jesenská (1920-1924), les deux principales destinataires des lettres d’amour de l’auteur, y est mise à contribution. L’Herne a sollicité Olivier Mannoni pour retraduire ces textes ; le résultat sera sans doute une découverte pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas Kafka épistolier ou diariste et une surprise pour ceux qui le connaissent par des traductions antérieures : la vigueur de la langue, l’audace des images, les constructions parfois déconcertantes donnent de l’homme privé et de l’écrivain Kafka une image différente de celle, plus discrète et plus policée, à laquelle on est accoutumé. Un florilège de textes écrits sur Kafka par d’autres écrivains et penseurs, allemands, français et d’autres nationalités, vient compléter une vingtaine de contributions dues aux participants français, mais aussi allemands, anglais, américains et canadiens, du colloque de Cerisy « Kafka après «son» siècle » (août 2010). Cet ensemble se clôt, comme il s’était ouvert, sur une rubrique « Interpréter Kafka », pour souligner qu’en définitive c’est le mouvement de l’interprétation, sans cesse relancé, qui porte la possibilité de survie de l’œuvre : l’examen s’oriente cette fois vers quelques-uns des textes écrits par Kafka entre 1917 et 1924, et notamment Chacals et Arabes, lequel, dès son titre, fascine par la polyvalence des lectures idéologiques ou politiques auxquelles il peut prêter dans le monde de 2014.

Lyrical, mysterious, and laden with symbolism, Franz Kafka's novels and stories have been translated into more than forty languages ranging from Icelandic to Japanese. In Transforming Kafka, Patrick O'Neill approaches these texts through the method he pioneered in Polyglot Joyce and Impossible Joyce, considering the many translations of each work as a single, multilingual "macrotext." Examining three novels - The Trial, The Castle, and America - and two short stories - "The Judgment" and "The Metamorphosis" - O'Neill offers comparative readings that consider both intertextual and intratextual themes. Wieso avancierte gerade Franz Kafka zum Symbol des Zeitalters der Extreme, wieso wurde und wird sein Werk in fast allen Kulturen der Welt – wenngleich höchst unterschiedlich – rezipiert? Welche Texte von Kafka bzw. über Kafka waren überhaupt zugänglich? Welche Formen produktiver Aneignung existierten? Der Band lotet ein literatur- bzw. kulturpolitisches Feld in Bezug auf die Aneignung und Durchsetzung des Kafkaschen Werkes aus. Auf der Basis einer kulturwissenschaftlichen und interkulturellen Erweiterung der Philologie geht es um die zugrunde liegenden literatur- und kulturpolitischen Bedingungen von Rezeption und Wirkung und die damit verbundenen kultur- und ideologiespezifischen Konstruktionsvoraussetzungen.

Is writing haunted by a categorical imperative? Does the Kantian sublime continue to shape the writer’s vocation, even for twentieth-century authors? What precise shape, form, or figure does this residue of sublimity take in the fictions that follow from it—and that leave it in ruins? This book explores these questions through readings of three authors who bear witness to an ambiguous exigency: writing as a demanding and exclusive task, at odds with life, but also a mere compulsion, a drive without end or reason, even a kind of torture. If Kafka, Blanchot, and Beckett mimic a sublime vocation in their extreme devotion to writing, they do so in full awareness that the trajectory it dictates leads not to metaphysical redemption but rather downward, into the uncanny element of fiction. As this book argues, the sublime has always been a deeply melancholy affair, even in its classical Kantian form, but it is in the attenuated speech of narrative voices progressively stripped of their resources and rewards that the true nature of this melancholy is revealed.
