When the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten (Viby, Denmark) published the cartoons of the prophet Mohammad in 2005, Denmark found itself at the center of a global battle about the freedom of speech. The paper's culture editor, Flemming Rose, defended the decision to print the 12 drawings, and he quickly came to play a central part in the debate about the limitations to freedom of speech in the 21st century. Since then, Rose has visited universities and think tanks and participated in conferences and debates around the globe in order to discuss tolerance and freedom. Rose writes about the people and experiences that have influenced the way he views the world and his understanding of the crisis, including meetings with dissidents from the former Soviet Union and ex-Muslims living in Europe. He provides a personal account of an event that has shaped the debate about what it means to be a citizen in a democracy and how to coexist in a world that is increasingly multicultural, multi-religious, and multi-ethnic.

Texts about the nocturnal journey of the Prophet Muḥammad (Mi‘rāj) abound in the Muslim world and outside. International attention has never been afforded to any version of text in any language of the Indonesian archipelago. One old version of the text from the area, the Malay Hikayat Mir’āj Nabi Muḥammad is presented here in Malay and English translation. The introductory chapters place the text in a wider context in Indonesian literatures while the manuscript of the text (Cod.Or. Leiden 1713) is described in detail. The text and translation purport to enhance interest in this important text in the Muslim world as seen from the Malay/Indonesian perspective.

This book considers the Arabic biographies of Prophet Muhammad, the earliest of which dates from two centuries after his life. These biographies, prized by Muslims, have been approached in the Western study of Islam from a range of positions. Some scholars reject them entirely, seeing in them products of the Muslim community's idealisation of its history, while others accept them at face value, reasoning that, if not exact versions of events, the events could not have differed too much from their descriptions. The author revisits the debate and reconsiders several key incidents in the life of the Prophet. By compiling an extensive corpus of materials and comparing them closely, this book analyses the transmission and the contents of the accounts. It shows that by understanding clearly the interaction in early Islam between written and oral modes of transmission, and by the judicious sieving of the accounts, as well as the lines of transmission, we can sometimes reach back to that generation of Muslims who though not themselves witness to the events were younger contemporaries of those who were. Establishing a solid basis for the informed study of Muhammad's biography and adding to the ongoing debate, this book will appeal to scholars of early Islam, history and theology.--provided by publisher.

The Expeditions is one of theoldest biographies of the Prophet Muhammad to survive into the modern era. Itsprimary author, Ma'mar ibn Rashid (714-770 AD/96-153 AH), was a prominentscholar from Basra in southern Iraq who was revered for his learning inprophetic traditions, Islamic law, and the interpretation of the Qur'an. Thisfascinating foundational seminal work contains stories handed down by Ma'mar tohis most prominent pupil, 'Abd al-Razzaq of Sana'a, relating Muhammad’s earlylife and prophetic career as well as the adventures and tribulations of hisearliest followers during their conquest of the Near East.Editedfrom a sole surviving manuscript, the Arabic text offers numerous improvedreadings over those of previous editions, including detailed notes on thetext’s transmission and variants as found in later works. This new translation, which renders the original into readable, modern English for the first time, isaccompanied by numerous annotations elucidating the cultural, religious andhistorical contexts of the events and individuals described within its pages.TheExpeditions representsan important testimony to the earliest Muslims’ memory of the lives of Muhammadand his companions, and is an indispensable text for gaining insight into thehistorical biography of both the Prophet and the rise of the Islamic empire.
