Abstract

This book is the first comprehensive study of foreign direct investment (FDI) liberalization. Political economy FDI research has long focused on how host-country politics influence the supply of FDI, or how firms choose to invest. By contrast, this book focuses on the politics of FDI demand: the sources of citizens' preferences for FDI inflows and countries' foreign ownership restrictions. Professor Sonal S. Pandya's theory of FDI regulation identifies how FDI redistributes income within host countries, raises local wages, and creates competition for local firms. Empirical tests also emphasize the central role of multinational cooperations' productive assets in shaping the politics of FDI. These tests feature an original dataset of annual country-industry foreign ownership regulations that spans more than one hundred countries during the period 1970-2000. This book highlights the economic and political foundations of global economic integration and supplies the tools to understand the growing economic conflicts between advanced economics and large emerging markets such as China and India.

Abstract

As in previous years, this report provides a quantitative overview of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and examines these capital flows by destination economic sector and geographical area of origin. It describes the pattern of FDI originating in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, focusing on the international expansion under way at some of the region's major companies, the so-called trans-Latins. The main theme of this report is the operations of European companies in Latin American and Caribbean. The report examines the behaviour and strategy of the major European transnationals and, in search of a more thorough understanding, takes a detailed look at two sectors where foreign capital, especially from Europe, plays a substantial role: commercial banking and power.

Abstract

This contributed volume seeks to provide a unique window on the globalization process by analyzing the dynamics of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Europe and Asia, as well as its influence on the renewal of public policies and regulations, both transnational and local. It discusses the link between the trans-nationalization of productive and business systems and the renewal of local regulations  in the light of concerns over competitiveness and attractiveness, as well as new social tensions. Multinational corporations (MNCs) as key actors of globalization are central for understanding the new interactions between the global, regional and local dimensions as well as for highlighting the challenges of regulation both at transnational level and within national boundaries. Research approaches along two broad lines are presented: First, a theoretical and empirical approach that examines links between the strategies of multinationals and local public policy in order to contribute to a better understanding of the institutional dynamics of social regulation. Second, a comparative approach that compares regional spaces, with particular attention to Europe on the one hand, and to the two great emerging powers, China and India, on the other.

Abstract

Internationalization processes have long been a core topic of International Business research. Very little focus, however, was thereby put on how foreign subsidiaries themselves internationalize. Nicolas Lohr investigates how foreign subsidiaries of multinational corporations expand their presence and functional scope into foreign territories. Multiple case-studies based on in-depth interviews with HQ and subsidiary management suggest that subsidiary internationalization represents a select MNC phenomenon. Foreign subsidiaries only appear to receive cross-border responsibility if their value proposition for overcoming liability of inter-regional foreignness is capable of more than offsetting any risk increase that stems from principal-agent relationships between corporate headquarters and foreign subsidiaries. After attaining the initial mandate, the subsidiary’s restrained access to HQ-like functions, intra-MNC competition and altering localization degrees in the market covered by the mandate puts the sustainability of cross-border responsibilities at risk. As a consequence, the internationalization of foreign subsidiaries often follow discontinuous rather than gradual evolutionary trajectories. In addition, cross-border subsidiary mandates appear to be pre-defined and temporary in nature. As a result, they may have a limited life span from their very conception.   Contents   ·         Subsidiary Internationalization ·         Subsidiary mandates ·         Principal-agent relationships   Target Groups ·         Researchers and students of International Business studies ·         Sales managers, CEOs of foreign subsidiaries   The Author Nicolas Lohr earned his doctorate from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland and received an MSc degree from the ESCP Europe in France.
