La parole politique et le débat public sont désorientés. Toute discrimination et toute distinction collective semblent relever d’une intention raciale. Dans le même temps, il est question de gommer le terme « race » de notre Constitution. Les sciences sociales observent les progrès des connaissances dans les domaines de la génétique comme menace pour elles-mêmes et peut-être pour la société. Si les progrès des sciences de la vie ne renforcent pas les inepties de la pensée raciste, ils ne les dissipent pas non plus.Dans ce moment de tensions politiques et d’incertitude intellectuelle, l’histoire de la formation des catégories raciales offre des repères pour notre époque. Le dépaysement dans le temps et dans l’espace, qui demeure le propre de l’histoire, est sans doute la voie la plus efficace pour mieux comprendre ce qui nous arrive.L’histoire raconte comment les sociétés et les institutions ont fait et font appel à la « différence naturelle » pour créer et recréer de la division en leur sein. C’est cela la politique raciale à l’âge contemporain : s’en prendre aux Afro-Américains, surtout lorsqu’ils deviennent citoyens, et imaginer le Juif biologique pour contrer l’intégration des juifs.L’histoire permet de comprendre en quoi la « race » est de part en part politique.

Kaum ein anderes Thema polarisierte die bundesrepublikanische Öffentlichkeit in den vergangenen Jahren so nachhaltig wie die Veröffentlichung der tendenziell rassistischen Theoreme Thilo Sarrazins im Sommer 2010. Rassistische Ressentiments zeigten sich hier wieder als in vielen Teilen der deutschen Gesellschaft etabliert und debattiert, wie der Verkaufserfolg von Sarrazins Bestseller "Deutschland schafft sich ab" demonstriert. Die vorliegende Arbeit fokussiert dieses gegenwärtige, insbesondere biologisch-genetische Rassismusphänomen in der bundesrepublikanischen Gesellschaft im Zeitraum von 2007 bis 2013. Sie analysiert die Verbreitung, die Entstehungsbedingungen sowie die naturwissenschaftliche Realität biologistischer, rassistischer Argumentationen in Deutschland. Hierfür nutzt diese Arbeit einen kombinierten Forschungsansatz von Sozial- und Naturwissenschaften, um das gegenwärtige Rassismusphänomen sowohl aus sozialwissenschaftlicher als auch aus biologischer Perspektive zu analysieren und zu beurteilen.

Are antisemitism and white supremacy manifestations of a general phenomenon? Why didn't racism appear in Europe before the fourteenth century, and why did it flourish as never before in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries? Why did the twentieth century see institutionalized racism in its most extreme forms? Why are egalitarian societies particularly susceptible to virulent racism? What do apartheid South Africa, Nazi Germany, and the American South under Jim Crow have in common? How did the Holocaust advance civil rights in the United States? With a rare blend of learning, economy, and cutting insight, George Fredrickson surveys the history of Western racism from its emergence in the late Middle Ages to the present. Beginning with the medieval antisemitism that put Jews beyond the pale of humanity, he traces the spread of racist thinking in the wake of European expansionism and the beginnings of the African slave trade. And he examines how the Enlightenment and nineteenth-century romantic nationalism created a new intellectual context for debates over slavery and Jewish emancipation. Fredrickson then makes the first sustained comparison between the color-coded racism of nineteenth-century America and the antisemitic racism that appeared in Germany around the same time. He finds similarity enough to justify the common label but also major differences in the nature and functions of the stereotypes invoked. The book concludes with a provocative account of the rise and decline of the twentieth century's overtly racist regimes--the Jim Crow South, Nazi Germany, and apartheid South Africa--in the context of world historical developments. This illuminating work is the first to treat racism across such a sweep of history and geography. It is distinguished not only by its original comparison of modern racism's two most significant varieties--white supremacy and antisemitism--but also by its eminent readability.
