"This collection of essays explores questions that challenge the traditional notion of a wisdom tradition among the Israelite literati, such as: Is the wisdom literature a genre or mode of literature or do we need new terminology? Who were the tradents? Is there such a thing as a "wisdom scribe" and what would that look like? Did the scribes who composed wisdom literature also have a hand in producing the other "traditions," such as the priestly, prophetic, and apocalyptic, as well as other non-sapiential works? Were Israelite sages open to non-sapiential forms of knowledge in their conceptualization of wisdom?"--

"Is there evidence for a distinct 'wisdom tradition' in ancient Israel? Mark R. Sneed redefines the wisdom literature as a loosely cohering collection of books that educated scribal apprentices in moral instruction. Sneed discusses the data for scribal culture and pedagogy in the ancient Near East, suggesting that wisdom literature was meant to complement, not to compete with, other modes of literature in the Hebrew Bible. The result is a surprising new picture of the authors and tradents of the wisdom literature"--

Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise 2016 ! Old Testament polemics against other gods, mocking them as powerless images, are often viewed as lacking great theological import. Drawing on Isa: 40–48, Jer. 10, Ps. 135, EpJer and SapSal, this study examines the history of such polemics and shows their connection to the wisdom tradition. The analysis of links between polemics against pagan gods and wisdom provides a historical context for the polemical strategy of these texts.

"This collection of essays examines the wisdom traditions of the Old Testament from a variety of angles. The slipperiness of the concept of 'wisdom literature', the transmission of 'wise' advice for living, rabbinic and patristic approaches to the Bible's wisdom traditions, and cutting-edge modern perspectives on such Old Testament books as Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes are all to be found here. In the tradition of the renowned previous v. from the Oxford Old Testament Seminar - King and Messiah in Israel and the Ancient Near East (1998), In Search of Pre-Exilic Israel (2004), Temple and Worship in Biblical Israel (2005), and Prophecy and Prophets in Ancient Israel (2010)-this new v. again brings the scholarship of the Oxford Seminar, here focused on the rich subject of Old Testament wisdom traditions, to an international readership."-- This collection of essays examines the wisdom traditions of the Old Testament from a variety of angles. The author addresses the controversial question of whether the personification of wisdom in the Sapientia Salomonis already represents a hypostasis or whether it is merely a preliminary stage in the sense of a poetic personification. Following an analysis of the historical traditions of the relevant wisdom texts in Proverbs 1-9, Job 28, Ecclesiasticus 1:1-10 and 24, the author proceeds to interpret the central texts of the Sapientia Salomonis (Wisdom 1:1-10; 7:1-8:1; 9:1-18 and 0:1-11:1). When looking at the concept of wisdom and the associated problem of the mediation between God and the human being, one must assume that there are influences from contemporary philosophy, as numerous philosophical borrowings are to be found in the late Jewish text (Middle Stoa: Poseidonios of Apamea; Middle Platonism: Antiochos of Ascalon, Eudoros of Alexandria).

The monograph Judging Q and Saving Jesus is characterised by careful textual analysis, showing a piercing critical eye in its impressive engagement with the secondary literature, and sharp and insightful critique. The target audience are specialists in the field of research on the Sayings Source Q (the hypothetical source of certain sayings of Jesus common to Matthew and Luke), historical Jesus, and early Christian theology. The book takes the stance that the hypothetical document Q can be reconstructed with sufficient precision and that this enables biblical scholars to study with confidence its genre and its thematic and ideological profile. The genre issue is central to the book overall structure and the alternative proposals are discussed at length and with sophistication. The author’s inference is that Q’s macrogenre is sapiential with occasional insertions of apocalyptic microstructures and motifs. This finding embodies progress in Historical Jesus studies.
