Abstract

The objective of the school is to present interdisciplinary approaches to the modeling and understanding of complex optical systems, ranging from lasers to multimode wave guides and optical communication networks For example, consider thermodynamic approaches to describe spatio temporal pattern formation in lasers, turbulence theory applied to both integrable and near integrable dynamical systems such as fibers for supercontinuum generation, and information theory analysis of nonlinear methods to overcome classical limits to the capacity of transmission channels.

Abstract

This textbook is intended for students in their third or fourth semester of engineering studies at universities of applied technology. It covers the fundamental principles of light and its manipulation (e.g. geometrical optics, wave optics, refraction, and reflection) as well as optical components and devices. There are numerous practice exercises with solutions.

Abstract

Combining the positive characteristics of microfluidics and optics, microstructured optical fibres (MOFs) have revolutionized the field of optoelectronics. Tailored guiding, diffractive structures and photonic band-gap effects are used to produce fibres with highly specialised, complex structures, facilitating the development of novel kinds of optical fibre sensors and actuators. Part One outlines the key materials and fabrication techniques used for microstructured optical fibres. Microfluidics and heat flows, MOF-based metamaterials, novel and liquid crystal infiltrated photonic crystal f
