Depuis vingt ans sont apparus des mouvements contestataires agissant au nom de l’éthique : altermondialisme, écologie, défense des droits des animaux. S’ils s’expriment majoritairement à travers des actions légales, ils ont cependant donné naissance à des groupes radicaux partisans d’attaques violentes et à des groupus-cules terroristes n’hésitant pas à recourir à des actions « armées ». Ce phénomène porte un nom : écoterrorisme. Depuis le début des années 1990, les Black Blocs livrent une véritable guérilla urbaine aux forces de l’ordre et le Front de libération des animaux ou le Front de la libération de la terre multiplient les actes criminels – sabotages, attentats ou meurtres –, ciblant les entreprises et le « pouvoir de l’argent ». Ils figurent aujourd’hui, aux États-Unis et en Grande-Bretagne, sur la liste noire des organisations terroristes au même titre que Daech et Al-Qaïda. La France est encore peu touchée mais tout laisse craindre que se développent dans un avenir proche des campagnes violentes dans l’Hexagone. Les événements de Sivens, Roybon et Notre-Dame-des-Landes en sont les signes annonciateurs.
