Abstract

Annotation Cognitive Informatics is a transdisciplinary field that studies the internal information processing mechanisms of the brain, the underlying abstract intelligence theories and denotational mathematics, and their engineering applications in cognitive computing, computational intelligence, and cognitive systems Cognitive Computing is a cutting edge paradigm of intelligent computing methodologies and systems based on CI, which implements computational intelligence by autonomous inferences and perceptions mimicking the mechanisms of the brain CI and CC not only synergize theories of modern information science, computer science, communication theories, AI, cybernetics, computational intelligence, cognitive science, intelligence science, neuropsychology, brain science, systems science, software science, knowledge science, cognitive robots, cognitive linguistics, and life science, but also reveal exciting applications in cognitive computers, cognitive robots, and computational intelligence.

Abstract

This engagingly written introduction to the cognitive sciences examines the historical and contemporary issues and research findings of the core cognitive science disciplines, including cognitive psychology, neuroscience, language, philosophy, and artificial intelligence. For each of the core disciplines of cognitive science, the historical development and classic research studies are presented in one chapter and current research development and issues follow in a second chapter. The student is given insight into the way each discipline has contributed to the growth of cognitive science and what directions research is taking in the future. This text assumes no background on the part of the reader.

Abstract

Cognitive science deals with such questions as 'How do we think?' and 'How do we learn, memorize, dream?'. It tackles the subject of human mentality by connecting discoveries from a range of disciplines that shed light on cognitive occurrences and the learning process. Cognitive science unites the fields of neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, linguistics, artificial intelligence, and social sciences. This book, aimed mostly at teachers, will provoke cognitive dissonance and intellectual unease, as it explores cognitive theories and allows teachers to update and internalise their 'in-head theories', embedded from their own school years. In order for this to happen, this volume provides information on new experiences of alternative teaching practices. Creating conditions for gaining these teaching experiences is the primary function and fundamental mission of politics in the field of education.

Abstract

With contributions from founders of the field, including Justin Barrett, E. Thomas Lawson, Robert N. McCauley, Paschal Boyer, Armin Geertz and Harvey Whitehouse, as well as from younger scholars from successive stages in the field's development, this is an important survey of the first twenty-five years of the cognitive science of religion. Each chapter provides the author's views on the contributions the cognitive science of religion has made to the academic study of religion, as well as any shortcomings in the field and challenges for the future. The book calls attention to the field whilst providing an accessible and diverse survey of approaches from key voices, as well as offering suggestions for further research within the field. This book is essential reading for anyone in religious studies, anthropology, and the scientific study of religion.

Abstract

In The Sequential Imperative William Edmondson explains how deep study of linguistics – from phonetics to pragmatics – can be the basis for understanding the organization of behaviour in any organism with a brain. The work demonstrates that Cognitive Science needs to be anchored in a linguistic setting. Only then can Cognitive Scientists reach out to reconsider the nature of consciousness and to appreciate the functionality of all brains. The core functionality of the brain – any brain, any species, any time – is delivery and management of the unavoidable bi-directional transformation between brain states and activity – the Sequential Imperative. Making it all work requires some general cognitive principles and close attention to detail. The book sets out the case in broad terms but also incorporates significant detail where necessary.
