Abstract

Black eyes, haggard, exhausted, possessed. Flowering beards on malingred bodies adorned with bones. A bowl for a bowl and the saint will have sacrifice for mantle. The sadhus, eternal clichés of Hindu mysticism, watch over Indian imagery. They are projected guardians of the Ganges and its sacred waters, nochers guiding the souls of the dead, impassive vigilantes reciting mantras before prostrate crowds or fasting in the wet belly of caves.00It is their way of being in the world, in reaction to the world, to carry their burden on a parallel path that Denis Rouvre admires among the Sadhus. In a form of non-identity straining towards annihilation, they oppose a resistance to the inevitability of their birth. They are those who are born to die, to no longer be. Individuals who brave the ordinary, the common lot. Of those who populate the portraits of the photographer. Of those who by their will, by their heroic posture, rise among the gods.

Abstract

All are charmed and soaked up by the simple though universal language Bruno V. Roels speaks. Each can wonder through his works, finding connections of his or her own, each can dive in or avoid the references made by means of the artist's titles. One can simply stick to the beauty of the image, if needed. After 'I Dreamt An Island' (2015), this is the second Fifty One publication of Bruno V. Roels, showing his mono-photograph-works. With an introduction by Roger Szmulewicz.

Abstract

With 'Surf Tribe', photographer Stephan Vanfleteren shows that there is far more to surf culture than just sport and competition. Surfing is also about a deep admiration0and respect for the ocean, as well as the feeling of insignificance when confronted with the forces of nature. Surfers use the waves for fun, but also to forget and to battle, both with others and with themselves. Vanfleteren looks beyond the traditional borders of the United States and Australia and searches the globe for people who live in places where sea and land meet. He documents a fluid community, which has nature as its0sole leader. He portrays both young talent as well as living icons and old legends, both competition surfers and freesurfers.0No action shots on azure blue waves but static and serene black and white portraits in Vanfleteren's well-known, haunting style, which show the real people behind the surfers, in all their strength and vulnerability. A series of images that penetrates to the true core of surf culture. 00Exhibition: CC Scharpoord, Knokke-Heist, Belgium (24.03.-28.05.2018).

Abstract

In ''Domestic Flight'', the viewer is not confronted with traces of what has been. Rather, each scene allows us a glimpse into the action of the story Camille Picquot is unfolding. Released of its burden of proof, photography can now fully be applied to its new purpose: to visually narrate and suggest a fictional story. In her artistic work, Picquot is equally at ease with photography as she is with film. Applying and mixing common practices of these media, she never places one above the other, but rather reinforces them both. In ''Domestic Flight'', Picquot does not shy away from adding a playful cameo of herself in the series, possibly hinting at Alfred Hitchcock's famous appearances. (Rein Deslé)

Abstract

Drawing on 19th-century photo techniques, Izu's still lifes and portraits are poised between lustrous sensuality and austere grandeur. When Kenro Izu is taking photographs, he finds himself constantly challenged by a seductive voice urging him to make a “nice picture.” And Izu’s photographs are gorgeous―the artist, inspired by 19th-century photography methods, has been working with a large-format camera since 1983, making detailed, lustrous contact prints on hand-coated platinum palladium paper. A master technician, Izu is considered one of the greatest living platinum printers. But taking “nice pictures” is not what Izu sets out to do.The photographer aims instead to capture something of the spirit or inner life of his chosen subject―whether it be a still life or an ancient, sacred monument. Izu describes this tension between capturing the essence and beauty of the subject as an “effort to hold myself at the very edge (before falling into the dark hole of seduction).” Kenro Izu: Seduction presents the results of these efforts: photographs by Izu of fruits, plants and human figures, all made with a large-format film camera and contact printed in platinum from 8x10 to 14x20-inch negatives. Japanese-born, US-based photographer Kenro Izu (born 1949) studied at Nippon University in Tokyo before deciding to settle in New York. In 1979 he began what has become a lifelong project, traveling to photograph the world’s sacred places. His journeys to Angkor Wat led him to establish a free pediatric hospital in Cambodia and found Friends Without a Border, a nonprofit organization to help Asian children.

Abstract

This mid-career retrospective volume focuses on Viviane Sassen's fine art photography, revealing a surrealist undercurrent in her work. Sassen recognizes Surrealism as one of her earliest artistic influences, seen in the uncanny shadows, fragmented bodies, and otherworldly landscapes she captures in her work. In addition to images from the acclaimed series Umbra, this volume draws from the series Flamboya, in which she returned to Kenya, Parasomnia, a dreamlike exploration of sleep, the Roxane series, a mutual portrait created with her muse, Roxane Danset, Of Lotus and Mud, a study of procreation and fecundity, and Pikin Slee, a journey to a remote village in Suriname. This book features a contextualizing essay and an insightful interview with the artist. Throughout, Sassen emerges as a poetic photographer obsessed with light and shadow and a brilliant technician, who is a master of both vibrant color and muted hues. Selected by Sassen herself from across the last ten years, the images draw on the surrealist strategies of collage and unexpected juxtapositions to give a survey of her practice.

Abstract

In 2015 portrait photographer Robin de Puy (1986) travels across America on a motorcycle. During this trip, an intimate portrait emerges in text and image of both herself as of the persons portrayed. In Ely, Nevada she found Randy. He rode past - fast - but in the split second she saw him she knew: De Puy had to know who this boy was. She took his portrait, left the town a few days later, and that was it - at least, that's what it seemed at the time. Back in Amsterdam Randy popped into her mind from time to time - it was impossible to know this boy and leave it at that single image. She looked him up again at the end of 2016, and then again in February 2017, and once more in May 2017. She turns him inside out, looks at him, stares at him and he lets her. In the Bonnefantenmuseum, Robin de Puy is presenting this portrait of Randy in the form of an installation that comprises photos and film. Exhibition: Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, The Netherlands (26.01. - 13.05.2018).

Abstract

In the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut monograph Sleeping by the Mississippi, Alec Soth turned his eye to another iconic body of water, Niagara Falls. As with his photographs of the Mississippi, Soth's pictures of Niagara are less about natural wonder than human desire. "I went to Niagara for the same reason as the honeymooners and suicide jumpers," says Soth, "the relentless thunder of the Falls just calls for big passion." Working over the course of two years on both the American and Canadian sides of the Falls using a large-format 8x10 camera, the photographs are rigorously composed and richly detailed. Soth depicts newlyweds and naked lovers, motel parking lots and pawn shop wedding rings. Throughout the book, Soth has interspersed a number of love letters from the subjects he photographed. We read about teenage crushes, workplace affairs, heartbreak and suicide. Oscar Wilde wrote of the Falls, "The sight of the stupendous waterfall must be one of the earliest, if not the keenest, disappointments in American married life." In Soth's Niagara, we see both the passion and the disappointment. His pictures are a remarkable portrayal of modern love and its aftermath
