Abstract

"Cancers in the Urban Environment: How Malignant Diseases Are Caused and Distributed among the Diverse People and Neighborhoods of a Major Global Metropolis, Second Edition, provides a detailed description of the occurrence of common forms of cancer in the ethnically, socially and environmentally complex milieu of a modern urban complex. The location is Los Angeles County, and the patterns of 72 different malignancies are described according to race, age, sex, social class calendar time (since 1972) and most notably, individual neighborhood, using detailed maps of high risk. This second edition uses twice as many cases and more demographic diversity. Physicians and scientific investigators in California and elsewhere can use the material provided to counsel patients and evaluate the consistency of any specific pattern of occurrence with each specific causal hypothesis. A detailed appendix describes the source of data, provides the basis for the choices made in the production of the volume, and gives a perspective on the search for "clusters" of malignancy"--

Abstract

This volume aims at providing a selection of the most effective and widely employed protocols used in the Ewing sarcoma field. Chapters are divided into five sections detailing the molecular biology techniques used to analyze Ewing sarcoma including tissue preservation and methods used in morpho-molecular diagnostics and routine immune-histological analysis. Additional wet-lab protocols comprise in vitro techniques including re-expression and functional analyses of target genes together with in vivo tools and models such as patient-derived xenografts (PDX) and orthotopic xenografts for metastasis assessment in Ewing sarcoma. A full section on bioinformatic approaches to Ewing sarcoma covering ChIPseq, epigenetic and systems biology analyses finalizes this volume. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and clearly written, Ewing sarcoma: Methods and Protocols aims to provide methods to further the study of Ewing sarcoma and bring researchers one step forward in the quest to fight this devastating disease.

Abstract

This extensive book brings together leading melanoma researchers from across the world and highlights many of the cutting-edge protocols and experimental systems currently being used to investigate questions surrounding this disease. The volume opens with sections on 2D and 3D cell culture-based approaches for studying melanoma biology, and continues with collections of chapters examining various approaches for detecting, isolating, and characterizing circulating melanoma cells, circulating tumor DNA, and exosomes, as well as experimental procedures for studying and detecting melanoma metastasis in both pre-clinical and clinical settings, bioinformatics-based approaches, protocols for quantifying and characterizing immune cell infiltrates in both melanoma tumors and tertiary lymphoid structures, and development and evaluation of therapeutic strategies for melanoma treatment. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and comprehensive, Melanoma: Methods and Protocols aims to serve basic research scientists and clinicians who bring questions from the clinic into the lab in order to translate observations in the laboratory into improved patient care for this highly malignant form of cancer. Abstract

This book explores various applications of deep learning to the diagnosis of cancer, while also outlining the future face of deep learning-assisted cancer diagnostics. As is commonly known, artificial intelligence has paved the way for countless new solutions in the field of medicine. In this context, deep learning is a recent and remarkable sub-field, which can effectively cope with huge amounts of data and deliver more accurate results. As a vital research area, medical diagnosis is among those in which deep learning-oriented solutions are often employed. Accordingly, the objective of this book is to highlight recent advanced applications of deep learning for diagnosing different types of cancer. The target audience includes scientists, experts, MSc and PhD students, postdocs, and anyone interested in the subjects discussed. The book can be used as a reference work to support courses on artificial intelligence, medical and biomedicaleducation.

Abstract

This volume explores the latest models and techniques used to study brain tumor biology. Chapters in this book are organized into four sections: in vivo models, ex vivo models, treatments in mice, and clinical imaging. Some of the topics covered in this book are in vivo preclinical models of lower-grade gliomas, medulloblastoma, and brain metastases; ex vivo methods for glioblastoma patient-derived cell lines and organotypic brain cultures for metastasis; in vivo treatments of preclinical models that assess neurological function, dynamic immunotherapy, and neurological impacts of brain irradiation; and clinical imaging and modeling, such as biomechanics and vascular perfusion. In the Neuromethods series style, chapters include the kind of detail and key advice from the specialists needed to get successful results in your laboratory. Cutting-edge and practical, Brain Tumors is a valuable resource that will help readers understand the heterogeneity of the techniques used to study the complexity of brain tumors. .

Abstract

This book summarizes the important developments in the field of cancer research, specifically uterine cervical/endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer. It highlights the recent advances in gynecologic cancer, such as next generation models of genetically engineered animal models or cancer cell lines, focusing on their significance for advancing our understanding of gynecologic cancer biology, prevention and treatment, and drug response and resistance. Cancer research in the area of gynecologic tumors has undergone an enormous transformation over the past decade, with a greater understanding of tumor biology, elucidation of novel targets for therapeutic intervention, and better recognition of genetic predisposition syndromes. At the same time, the recent advances in basic cancer research have provided key insights into all aspects of gynecologic cancer biology, including developmental pathways and the impact of lineage plasticity, understanding metastatic progression, uncovering the roles of the tumor microenvironment , exploring tumor evolution, and discovering new therapeutic approaches and mechanisms of drug sensitivity and adaptive response. Molecular Diagnosis and Targeting for Gynecologic Malignancy appeals to investigators, clinicians, residents and postdocs who are curious about new research on gynecologic malignancies. It not only presents basic and translational research, but also explores the generalizability of the evidence covering the interface between basic and clinical science. Furthermore, a number of the topics offer the basis for new ideas that have the potential to advance into the gynecologic malignancies. This book provides readers with state-of-the-art information that will help improve the lives of patients with these challenging diseases.
