Abstract

Christine Daigle explores Nietzsche's phenomenological method, a 'wild phenomenology', to elucidate his understanding of the human being as an intentional embodied consciousness, as a being-in-the-world and as a being-with-others. Establishing this phenomenological conception of the human allows Daigle to revisit the Nietzschean notions of free spirit and the Overhuman and how they express the ethical and cultural-political flourishing Nietzsche envisions for human beings.

Abstract

Abstract

"Recent Anglophone scholarship has successfully shown that Nietzsche's thought makes important contributions to a wide range of contemporary philosophical debates. In so doing, however, this work has lost sight of another important feature of Nietzsche's project, namely his desire to challenge the very conception of philosophy that has been used to assess his merits as a philosopher. In other words, contemporary scholarship has overlooked Nietzsche's contributions to metaphilosophy, i.e. debates around the nature, methods, and aims of philosophy. This important new collection of essays brings together an international group of distinguished scholars to explore and discuss these contributions and debates. It will appeal to anyone interested in metaphilosophy, Nietzsche studies, German studies, or intellectual history"--

Abstract

Plato dispersed his account of how Socrates became Socrates across three dialogues. Thus, Plato rendered his becoming discoverable only to readers truly invested. Laurence Lampert recognises the path of Plato's strides and guides us through the true account of Socrates' becoming. He divulges how and why Plato ordered his Phaedo, Parmenides, and Symposium chronologically to give readers access to Socrates' development on philosophy's fundamental questions of being and knowing. In addition to a careful and precise analysis of Plato's Phaedo, Parmenides, and Symposium, Lampert shows that properly entwined, Plato's three dialogues fuse to portray a young thinker entering philosophy's true radical power. Lampert reveals why this radicality needed to be guarded and places this discussion within the greater scheme of the politics of philosophy.

Abstract

Drawing on thinkers as diverse as Aristotle, Aquinas, Duns Scotus, Grotius, Husserl and Deleuze, Connelly traces Leibniz's conceptualisation of power through its applications in his legal texts, revealing that Leibniz in fact reconceptualises power under a new name: the state space.

Abstract

Charlotte Alderwick presents Schelling’s ontology as fundamentally power-based. She demonstrates that this ontology enables his unique conception of human freedom outlined in the 'Freedom' essay. This distinctive reading demonstrates that Schelling’s power-based ontology can usefully problematise and supplement contemporary work on power-based ontologies. First, where current work focuses on powers in relation to specific areas of metaphysics, Schelling provides a holistic picture, encompassing these areas into a single ontological story. Secondly, engagement with Schelling’s work points to problems (and to possible solutions) that will arise for any power-based metaphysics, but have not been examined in the literature.
