Abstract

Roger Anger (1923–2008) was one of the most prolific architects in France during the 1950s and 1960s. His unique architectural language is characterized by sculptural plasticity and individualized, timeless modernity. In 1965, he was appointed chief architect of Auroville, an idealistic city conceived in South India. The city’s founder, Mirra Alfassa, asked the architect to design “the city the earth needs” as a model city for 50,000 inhabitants. The experimental nature of the Auroville project, in the context of rapidly urbanizing India, took up Alfassa’s whole-hearted attention, where he set standards for the city of the future that could serve as a replicable model. He also undertook work for other new towns in India such as Vijaynagar, Kudrimukh, Faridabad, and Salem.

Abstract

Abstract

"The John Hancock Center. Marina City. Sandburg Village. The Sears Tower. The Inland Steel Building. From skyline-defining icons to wonders of the world, the second period of the Chicago skyscraper transformed the way Chicagoans lived and worked. The Second Chicago School dominates many histories of the era. Yet these accounts often overlook essential Chicago sites, important areas away from downtown, the teams of people involved in the conception and construction of skyscrapers, and the financial, social, racial, and political factors that influenced the buildings that came to be. Thomas Leslie's comprehensive look at the modern era of Chicago skyscrapers rewrites the narrative to view the skyscraper idea, and the buildings themselves, within the broad expanse of city history. As construction emerged from the depths of the Great Depression, structural, mechanical, and cladding innovations evolved while continuing to influence designs. An earlier generation of architects would have been impressed-but not shocked-by expansive glass elevations and more efficient concrete columns, girders, and slabs. The truly radical changes concerned the motivations that drove construction of many new skyscrapers. While profit remained key in the Loop, developers elsewhere worked with a Daley political regime that saw tall buildings as tools for a wholesale recasting of the city's appearance, demography, and economy. Focusing on both the wider cityscape and specific buildings, Leslie reveals skyscrapers to be the physical results of negotiations between motivating and mechanical causes. Illustrated with more than 140 photographs, Chicago Skyscrapers, 1934-1986 tells the fascinating stories of the people, ideas, negotiations, decision-making, compromises, and strategies that changed the history of architecture and one of its showcase cities"--

Abstract

The book is about the question of time in the urban project of Chandigarh. It takes stock of the entire period of conception of the city from 1951 to the death of Pierre Jeanneret in 1965. While there have been many publications on the city, this one details the very conception of the city, linking the urbanism and the architecture to the archives of the Le Corbusier Foundation. Our ambition in make this information accessible to all, especially to the inhabitants and leaders of Chandigarh, is so that a detailed knowledge of the city’s design can be used to help preserve it.

Abstract

Abstract

A visual and scholarly deep dive into Cuba’s modernist gems of the postwar eraIn the decades after World War II, from just prior to the revolution and into the mid-1980s, modernist architecture blossomed in Cuba, attracting both native talent and leading international architects from Europe. Havana Modern examines Cuban modernism’s highlights with a wealth of archival materials, photos and new scholarship. Edited by Rub n Gallo–author of Mexican Modernity (2005), Freud’s Mexico (2010) and Proust’s Latin Americans (2014)–the volume is arranged in 10 chapters authored by current and former Princeton faculty members and graduate students. These essays, which arose from seminars organized by Gallo and historian Beatriz Colomina, examine Max Abramovitz’s American Embassy; Richard Neutra’s De Schultess House; Mart n Dom nguez Esteban, Miguel Gast n and Emilio del Junco’s Radiocentro; Mies van Der Rohe’s office building for Ron Barcard S.A.; Vittorio Garatti, Roberto Gottardi and Ricardo Porro’s National Art Schools for Havana; Mario Girona’s Coppelia Ice-cream parlor and park; Vittorio Garatti, Hugo D’Acosta and Sergio Baroni’s Cuban Pavilion at Expo 67; Antonio Quintana and Alberto Rodriguez’s “Edificio Experimental”; and Aleksandr Grigorievich Rochegov’s USRR Embassy. Havana Modern draws on history, politics, culture, literature and film to elucidate this outstandingly rich era in architectural history.

Abstract

"This publication presents the archaeological evidence from two associated Minoan sites situated at Apesokari in the Mesara Plain of south-central Crete, Tholos Tomb A and the neighboring free-standing domestic complex on Vigla hill. It thoroughly reconstructs the natural and social landscape of this Cretan community from the late Prepalatial to the early Neopalatial periods through its interdisciplinary character; this includes photogrammetric two- and three-dimensional models of the architectural remains, viewshed analysis of both monuments and of the earlier Tholos Tomb B, as well as A-DNA and stable isotope analysis of the bones. The study of the burial dataset provides insights into the social construction of collective memory and identity by the burying social group, whereas the habitational deposits from the building on Vigla hill establish the longevity and function of the site as a node of the southern Mesara communication and exchange networks"--
