Als vakbondsman, pacifist, antimilitarist, flamingant, socialist, utopist, feminist, communist, wereldverbeteraar en 'technocraat' deed Leo Frenssen van zich spreken. Op straat demonstreerde hij in het centrum van Antwerpen allerhande turnoefeningen en reed hij rond met zijn triporteur. In oktober 1938 zorgde hij, nationaal en internationaal, voor opzien. De kleurrijke Frenssen haalde de voorpagina's van de kranten. Uit het niets behaalde zijn Teknokratische Partij ineens zes zetels in de Antwerpse gemeenteraad. De klassieke partijen, met burgemeester Camille Huysmans op kop, stonden met hun mond vol tanden. In april 1939 deed Frenssen het nog eens over. De leurder werd verkozen tot volksvertegenwoordiger. Deze biografie vertelt voor het eerst zijn bewogen levensverhaal.

This book tackles questions related to democracy, populism and truth, with results that are sure to inform pressing academic and popular debates. It is common to describe many of today’s most energizing politicians and political movements as populist. Some are progressive advocates of greater economic democracy or individual rights, while others are recognizably authoritarian and anti-democratic, even while claiming to defend democracy. What all populist leaders share in common is a rhetorical approach: their ability to articulate, or at least profess to channel, the wishes of ‘the people’, a group that populist leaders claim a unique ability to understand and govern, especially with regard to their dissatisfaction with ruling elites. They decry corruption (although not necessarily with any sincerity), and they sometimes identify more mainstream politicians and bureaucrats as ‘enemies of the people.’ The rise of populist politics raises pressing questions about the nature of populism, but also about relationships between populism and democratic institutions. For example, is populism ever a democratic tendency, or does its invocation of a monolithic demos (‘the people’) signify a fundamentally anti-democratic worldview? Populist political rhetoric also raises concerns about the relationship between truth, democracy, and journalistic integrity. While the history of anti-democratic advocacy (famously illustrated by Plato) has often highlighted the tendency of a democratic style of politics to prioritize popularity over truth, the development of social media—and evolving norms of journalistic communication and public political discourse—raise these misgivings in new forms.

Analyse van de oorzaken van het falen van het proces van democratisering in Oost-Europa na de val van de Berlijnse Muur in 1989. Ivan Krastev en Stephen Holmes geven in Falend licht een scherpzinnige analyse van onze politieke cultuur. Het idee, de belofte, was dat Oost-Europese landen na de val van de Muur steeds meer op West-Europa zouden gaan lijken. Maar anno 2019 worden we wakker in een wereld waarin het Westen juist steeds meer inspiratie lijkt te putten uit de antiliberale populistische leiders uit de voormalige Sovjet-Unie. Ergens is iets verschrikkelijk misgegaan, dat staat vast. In dit briljante boek, dat zowel politieke psychologie, geopolitieke analyse als cultuurkritiek is, laten Krastev en Holmes overtuigend zien dat we terug moeten naar 1989 om de wereld van vandaag te begrijpen. Des la fin des années 1990, les partis populistes de droite radicale ont entamé une nouvelle phase dans leur développement en atteignant des performances électorales inédites et en accédant plus aisément au pouvoir. Pourtant, dans le même temps, ils demeurent considérés comme étant une menace pour la démocratie libérale. L'objectif de cette recherche est d'estimer l'influence des partis populistes de droite radicale sur la fabrique des politiques publiques, en interrogeant leur capacité à exercer une influence mais aussi le mode opératoire par lequel ils procèdent. L'Union démocratique du centre (UDC) en Suisse, le Front national (FN) en France et le Vlaams Belang (VB) en Belgique sont étudiés dans cet ouvrage grâce à la méthode du process-tracing, sur la base d'un large corpus de données notamment composé de 107 entretiens semi-dirigés, de documents d'archives et de nombreuses observations directes. Alors que chaque cas étudié est confronté à un rapport avec le pouvoir distinct, la recherche met au jour un modèe général de l'influence et permet d'appréhender celle-ci lors des différentes phases du processus de fabrique des politiques publiques. Cet ouvrage contribue à enrichir la littérature sur les partis populistes de droite radicale, sur l'influence partisane, sur l'analyse des politiques publiques mais aussi sur la démocratie de par les implications qu'elle comporte.

L'Union européenne se construirait en dépassant les identités. Il faudrait lesfaire rentrer, au chausse-pied si nécessaire, dans « plus d Europe ». Et cela« dans l'intérêt des peuples ». Cette vision gorgée de bonnes intentions adominé la scène politique pendant des décennies. Depuis plus de vingt ans,la construction européenne se heurte pourtant à une résistance croissante,passive ou active. Une résistance qui s est exprimée notamment lorsdes différents référendum, et qui a culminé en juin 2016 avec le Brexit,symptôme d un mal qui n est pas que britannique et que certains n ontpas voulu voir. Avec arrogance, les élites ont taxé le vote britannique depopuliste, raciste, etc. Pour sauver l'Europe, ne faudrait-il pas pourtant quecelles-ci se décident à entendre la colère qui gronde et qu elles acceptent dese réconcilier enfin avec les peuples.
