On assiste de nos jours à un retour en force de l’histoire dans le domaine de la traductologie, que ce soit par l’examen des textes traduits ou par celui des théories antérieures auxquelles pourtant les théories contemporaines entendent se substituer depuis quelques décennies. Cette nouvelle mise en perspective de la traduction nous oblige à repenser un legs historique tributaire de méthodes d’investigation aujourd’hui contestées. La théorie française de la traduction entre la fin de l’âge classique et la fin de l’époque romantique demeure en effet inégalement connue : à défaut d’appuis sûrs, que les textes théoriques sont seuls à procurer, bien des préjugés ont pu se maintenir à son sujet au cours des cent années qui coïncident avec l’une des grandes mutations de la culture française. Pour la première fois sont réunis ici plus de 30 textes théoriques et critiques qui jettent un éclairage nouveau sur la variété des techniques et fonctions de la traduction entre 1748 et 1847, en même temps qu’ils révèlent les enjeux des grands genres réflexifs, la théorie, la préface, le compte rendu. Chacun adopte à l’égard de l’opération traduisante, de sa valeur d’échange ou de ses fonctions au sein de la culture française, des attitudes analogues ou différentes, voire concurrentes, qui constituent en même temps des repères essentiels pour l’historien de la traduction et de la littérature. De la lecture de ces textes se dégagent moins une « pensée » sur la traduction, que les structures d’un discours subtilement assorti à la plupart des interrogations qui ponctuent l’évolution des savoirs langagiers. Les textes sont introduits par des notices historiques et descriptives. Une bibliographie substantielle complète le volume.

A History of Modern Translation Knowledge is the first attempt to map the coming into being of modern thinking about translation. It breaks with the well-established tradition of viewing history through the reductive lens of schools, theories, turns or interdisciplinary exchanges. It also challenges the artificial distinction between past and present and it sustains that the latter’s historical roots go back far beyond the 1970s. Translation Studies is but part of a broader set of discourses on translation we propose to label “translation knowledge”. This book concentrates on seven processes that make up the history of modern translation knowledge: generating, mapping, internationalising, historicising, analysing, disseminating and applying knowledge. All processes are covered by 58 domain experts and allocated over 55 chapters, with cross-references. This book is indispensable reading for advanced Master- and PhD-students in Translation Studies who need background information on the history of their field, with relevance for Europe, the Americas and large parts of Asia.
