Bien avant le Grand Tour qui, au XVIIIe siècle, entraîna à Rome nombre d'artistes, mais aussi d'hommes de lettres et de savants, il y eut le Voyage à Rome des artistes européens du XVIe siècle, événement marquant pour l'histoire de l'art. Presque tous sont venus, des Flandres comme d'Espagne et du Portugal, de France comme d'Allemagne et de plus loin encore. Ils accouraient à Rome pour voir et pour apprendre, pour copier l'antique, pour étudier Raphaël, Michel-Ange et d'autres maîtres, pour entrer dans leurs ateliers - où leur présence a été rarement attestée -, et décrochaient quelquefois des commandes.
