Contemporary urban development is increasingly characterized by a reliance on diagrams to convey the rational, statistical point of view of the professional urban planner. In his new book Urbanisms, architect Steven Holl suggests that just as modern medicine has recognized the power of the irrational psyche, urban planners need to realize that the experiential power of cities cannot be completely rationalized and must be studied subjectively. With a selection of urbanand architectural projects from his thirty year practice, Holl stretches urban planning into the domain of uncertainty. Architect Steven Holl offers a window on his design process by sharing watercolors and poems made parallel to his built works. This book presents the inspiration for fifteen projects realized over the past twenty-five-years from the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinky to Maggi's St. Batholomew's hospital in London, to the REACH, Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. As Holl writes, " the painter thinks in form and color. The poet thinks in words. Architecture must shape space and light driven by idea, forget of words, form, colors and materials toward a poetic form.
